About The Position

To assist in the day-to-day management of the patient care area. This includes obtaining necessary patient information and assisting providers in medical procedures. The role also involves supporting RNs, LPNs, and clinical staff in performing their duties and carrying out necessary functions in accordance with established policies and procedures.

Requirements

  • High School Graduate or GED equivalent from a department of education accredited program required.
  • Medical Assistant certificate/license.
  • American Heart Association BLS certification required.
  • Thorough education or training in the basics of medical terminology.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of computers and proficiency in the use of an electronic health record system required.
  • Strong customer service skills and ability to multi-task while working in a high volume work environment required.
  • Ability to read and communicate effectively in English.
  • Strong written and verbal skills with the ability to communicate effectively with customers, medical staff, and hospital staff.
  • Ability to identify and implement appropriate patient communication strategies and overcome accessibility barriers, as required.
  • Ability to use Language Line or find Certified Interpreter for Interpretation as needed.

Nice To Haves

  • One (1) year of outpatient experience preferred.
  • Phlebotomy drawing certificate preferred.
  • Knowledge of web based programs and Microsoft Office suite of products including Outlook, Word and Excel preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Set-up, clean, and turn-over rooms between patients, following established sanitary protocols.
  • Provide direct patient care based on clinic policy and procedures.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and skill in performing ordered treatments.
  • Prepare patients for procedures or examinations.
  • Take and record patient's height, weight, blood pressure, pulse rate, respiration, temperature, SpO2, and pain perception.
  • Perform basic lab procedures appropriately and demonstrate ability to perform venipuncture.
  • Obtain laboratory samples and complete paperwork as ordered by the provider.
  • Perform CLIA Waived Testing.
  • Maintain and utilize equipment appropriately and ensure it is in good working order.
  • Inventory and stock supplies as needed.
  • Accurately call in prescriptions upon approval of the provider.
  • Transcribe, receive, and interpret provider orders for assigned patients.
  • Carefully document all patient-related information in the EMR.
  • Respond and provide direction in changing workloads and during crisis and emergent situations.
  • Consistently demonstrate awareness of patient rights and function as the patient’s advocate.
  • Prepare and administer medications with knowledge of action, mode, side effects, and contraindications under the direction of a medical provider.
  • Screen and follow up on patient test results, notifying providers of critical results.
  • Perform patient care and communications within the guidelines of the Relationship and Results Oriented Healthcare Model.
  • Communicate and complete handoff documentation for effective handoff of patient care for direct admission.
  • Possess knowledge related to The Joint Commission, CMS, OSHA, ACHA, and other healthcare agencies relevant to the outpatient setting.
  • Provide and explain educational material to patients, families, and caregivers.
  • Assess patient teaching needs and participate in teaching opportunities.
  • Perform clerical tasks such as scheduling surgical cases, follow-up appointments, obtaining insurance authorizations, and coordinating patient referrals.
  • Handle calls efficiently and direct special problem calls to the appropriate person.
  • Adhere to safety precautions and procedures in the performance of all duties to ensure a safe environment.
  • Support other physician practices as assigned based on competency.
  • Demonstrate understanding of legal issues in the clinic (e.g., child abuse, rape, blood alcohol, gunshot wound, medical examiner, Baker Act, Marchman Act, human trafficking, and elder abuse).
  • Review hospital email for important notices and/or assigned competencies.
  • Note brief history or reason for visit in the patient’s EMR in a timely manner.
  • Assist clinical staff in completing examinations and procedures as instructed.
  • Participate in opening and closing processes of the clinic as required.
  • Participate in the orientation of new personnel.
  • Under the direction of the nurse or provider in charge, take responsibility for medical supplies and cleaning of medical instruments and equipment.
  • Assist with or institute emergency measures for sudden adverse developments in patients such as cardiac arrest or other emergencies.
  • Work under the direction of the Physician Practice Manager, CNO, Clinical Coordinator, and Medical Director to oversee, manage, train, and assist nurses and other staff within the department.
  • Follow all hospital and clinic policies regarding clinical and non-clinical job duties.
  • Support HRMC’s Mission Statement and follow the Medical Center’s Compliance Program and Ethical Standards of Conduct.
  • Support Departmental Policies related to compliance and complete documentation in observance of regulatory Standards.
  • Maintain knowledge of HIPAA and HITECH awareness and comply appropriately.
  • Attend training and in-services concerning all aspects of assigned duties.
  • Report any incidences of suspected fraud, waste, or abuse violations to the Compliance Officer.
  • Utilize PTO/DTO system appropriately.
  • Use equipment and supplies responsibly, avoiding unnecessary use and abuse.
  • Act as a liaison between patients, physicians, nursing, and other departments to facilitate collaborative practice in providing quality patient care.
  • Investigate specific problems objectively, timely, and completely before making judgments or decisions, utilizing available resources as appropriate.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of nursing and administrative hierarchical structure and chain of command, following proper lines of communication.
  • Create and maintain an open, positive work environment by example, utilizing effective human relations and communication skills.
  • Provide input into decisions affecting nursing practice.
  • Participate in the preparation of reports for Nursing Administration and Risk Management as indicated.
  • Notify physician(s) of pertinent observations, reactions, incidents, and abnormal diagnostic tests as required.
  • Provide input into decisions affecting nursing practice through participation in nursing committees or department meetings.
  • Actively participate in committees for improvement of nursing care.
  • Assist with data collection to facilitate process improvement.

  • Complete annual in-service updates as required by hospital policy, ensuring all required certifications remain up-to-date.

  • Demonstrate the ability to precept other clinical staff members under the direct supervision of the Physician Practice Manager, Clinical Coordinator, and Medical Director.
  • Understand the employee role within the FROST Customer Service program and the Hospital Code of Conduct and hold self and other associates accountable for the principles of FROST and Conduct standards.
  • Participate in daily rounds in the department to ensure issues impacting staff satisfaction and patient experience are addressed.
  • Take proactive steps to be knowledgeable of customer service scores/HCAHPS.
  • Act as a customer service advocate by using appropriate professional and ethical behavior when relating to patients/families/visitors and co-workers.
  • Deliver care or service in a non-judgmental and non-discriminatory manner that is sensitive to client diversity.
