About The Position

POSITION PURPOSE: To assist in the day-to-day management of the patient care area. Obtain necessary patient information and to assist the providers in medical procedures. Assist the RN, LPN, and the clinical staff in performing their duties and carrying on the necessary functions required in accordance with established policies and procedures. JOB DUTIES: Certified Medical Assistant / Registered Medical Assistant Set-up, clean and turn-over room between patients, following established sanitary protocols. The CMA/RMA provides direct care based on the policy and procedures of the clinic. Demonstrates knowledge and skill in performing ordered treatments. Prepares patient for procedure or examination. Take and record height, weight, and blood pressure, pulse rate, respiration, temperature, Sp02, and patient pain perception. Performs basic lab procedures appropriately and demonstrates ability to perform venipuncture. Obtain laboratory samples and complete paper work as ordered by the provider. Perform CLIA Waived Testing. Obtain laboratory samples and complete paper work as ordered by the provider. Maintains and utilizes equipment appropriately and ensures equipment is in good working order. Inventories and stocks supplies as needed. Accuracy of calling in prescriptions upon approval of provider. Transcribes, receives and interprets provider orders for assigned patient. Carefully documents all patient related information in EMR. Demonstrates an ability to respond and provide direction in changing workload and during crisis and emergent situations. Consistently demonstrates an awareness of patient rights and functions as the patient’s advocate. Prepares and administers medications with knowledge of action, mode, side effects, and contraindications under the direction of a medical provider. Demonstrates adequate knowledge and skill in regards to administration of medications under the direction of a provider. Calls in prescriptions upon approval of provider. Screens and follows up on patient test results. Notifies providers of critical test results. Performs patient care and communications within the guidelines of the Relationship and Results Oriented Healthcare Model utilizing the recommended bundles of best practice. Communicates and completes handoff documentation for effective handoff of patients care for direct admission. Required to have knowledge related to The Joint Commission, CMS, OSHA, ACHA, and any other Health care agency related to the outpatient setting. Provides and explains education material to patients, families, and caregivers. Assesses patient teaching needs and participates in teaching opportunities with patients and other significant individuals as indicated. Performs clerical tasks such as scheduling of surgical cases, scheduling follow-up appointments, obtaining insurance authorizations and coordinating patient referrals. Communicate to individual’s ability to understand. Handle calls efficiently and direct special problem calls to appropriate person. The Certified Medical Assistant/ Registered Medical Assistant adhere to safety precautions and procedures in the performance of all duties in order to ensure a safe environment as outlined in the Medical Clinic Exposure Plan. Blood Borne Pathogens Disposal of needles, syringes and sharps Clean-up procedure for bloody/body fluids Storage, handling and disposal of medical waste Supports other physician practices as assigned based on competency. Demonstrates understanding of legal issues in the clinic (i.e. child abuse, rape, blood alcohol, gunshot wound, medical examiner, Baker Act, Marchman Act, human trafficking and elder abuse. Reviews hospital email for important notices and/or assigned competencies. Note brief history or the reason for visit in the patient’s EMR in a timely manner. Assist the clinical staff in completing examination and procedures as instructed. Participates in opening and closing processes of clinic as required. Participates in orientation of new personnel. Under the direction of the nurse or provider in charge, takes responsibility of medical supplies and cleaning of the medical instruments and equipment. Assists with or institutes emergency measures for sudden adverse developments in patients such as cardiac arrest or other emergencies. Works under the direction of the Physician Practice Manager, the CNO, the Clinical Coordinator, and Medical Director to oversee, manage, train, and assist nurse and other staff within the department. Will follow all hospital and clinic policies regarding clinical and non-clinical job duties. COMPLIANCE/FINANCIAL: Supports HRMC’s Mission Statement and follows the Medical Center’s Compliance Program and Ethical Standards of Conduct. Supports Departmental Policies related to compliance and completes documentation in observance of regulatory Standards. Maintains a knowledge base of HIPAA and HITECH awareness and complies appropriately. Attends training and in-services concerning all aspects of assigned duties. Responsibilities to include, but not limited to, federal and state statutes, regulations and guidelines. Reports any incidences of suspected fraud, waste or abuse violations to the Compliance Officer. Utilizes PTO/DTO system appropriately. Uses equipment and supplies in a responsible manner avoiding unnecessary use and abuse. COMMUNICATION/INTERPERSONAL SKILLS: Acts as a liaison between patients, physicians, nursing and other departments to facilitate a collaborative practice in the provision of quality patient care. Investigates specific problems objectively, timely and completely before making judgements or decisions. Utilizes available resources as appropriate. Demonstrates knowledge of nursing and administrative hierarchical structure and chain of command. Follows proper lines of communication. Creates and maintains, by example, an open positive work environment by utilizing effective human relations and communications skills. Provides input into decisions affecting nursing practice. Participates in preparation of reports for Nursing Administration and Risk Management as indicated. Notifies physician(s) of pertinent observations, reactions, incidents, and abnormal diagnostic tests as required. Provides input into decisions affecting nursing practice through participation in nursing committees or department meetings. AGE SPECIFIC COMPETENCY: This staff member must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skill necessary to provide care, based on physical, psychosocial, educational and safety related criteria, appropriate to the age of the patients served in his/her assigned service area. Annual inservice updates as required by hospital policy are completed. All required certification remain up-to-date. Demonstrates a through knowledge of safety policies and procedures. Demonstrates the ability to precept other clinical staff members under the direct supervision of the Physician Practice manager, Clinical Coordinator and the Medical Director. CUSTOMER SERVICE/PATIENT EXPERIENCE: Understands the employee role within the FROST Customer Service program and the Hospital Code of Conduct and holds self and other associates accountable for the principles of FROST and Conduct standards. Participates in daily rounds in department to ensure issues are addressed in areas that impact staff satisfaction and the patient experience. Takes proactive steps to be knowledgeable of customer service scores/HCAHPS. Is a customer service advocate by using appropriate professional and ethical behavior when relating to patients/families/visitors and co-workers. Delivers care or delivery of service in a non-judgmental and non-discriminatory manner that is sensitive to client diversity. Uses appropriate professional and ethical behavior when relating to other customers, including, but not limited to, physicians, other medical facilities/providers, vendors, etc. Uses the principles of AIDET to exceed customer expectation at every encounter with all customers.

Requirements

  • High School Graduate or GED equivalent from a department of education accredited program required.
  • Medical Assistant certificate/license.
  • American Heart Association BLS certification required.
  • Thorough education or training in the basics of medical terminology.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of computers and proficiency in the use of an electronic health record system required.
  • Strong customer service skills and ability to multi-task while working in a high volume work environment required.
  • Ability to read and communicate effectively in English.
  • Strong written and verbal skills with the ability to communicate effectively with customers, medical staff, and hospital staff.
  • Ability to identify and implement appropriate patient communication strategies and overcome accessibility barriers, as required.
  • Ability to use Language Line or find Certified Interpreter for Interpretation as needed.
  • Physical ability for extensive walking and standing.
