About The Position

The Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) position at Geisinger Lewistown Hospital (GLH) is a regular, full-time role with a scheduled weekly hour of 40. This position offers a $3,000 bonus for those who qualify. The ideal candidate will be a graduate of an accredited 1-year certificate or 2-year Medical Assistant program and hold a Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) or Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) certification from a recognized governing association (NHA, AMT, AAMA, NAHP, NCCT, AAH, or AMCA). The role involves direct patient care, administrative duties, and maintaining a safe and efficient clinical environment.

Requirements

  • Graduate of an accredited 1-year certificate or 2-year diploma Medical Assistant program preferred.
  • Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) or Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) required.
  • Certified by one of the listed governing associations required: NHA, AMT, AAMA, NAHP, NCCT, AAH, or AMCA.
  • High School Diploma or Equivalent (GED)
  • Basic Life Support Certification within 6 months

Responsibilities

  • Obtains and documents patient's reason for visit, weight, vital signs, screening information, medication review, and pertinent information for the provider using the electronic medical record.
  • Sets up examination and treatment rooms between cases.
  • Assists patients as needed to prepare for their visit with the provider, ensuring patient safety and privacy.
  • Provides direct patient care as directed by the provider, including performing EKGs, wound dressings, and assisting with minor surgical procedures and ancillary examinations.
  • Prepares and administers medications according to policy and procedure after validation of knowledge and competency (excluding intravenous medications).
  • Completes patient tests and treatments per provider's order according to policy and procedure after validation of knowledge and competency.
  • Collects and prepares laboratory specimens and completes associated paperwork accurately and efficiently.
  • Performs phlebotomy and may assist in specific laboratory functions related to testing, reporting, and quality assurance of laboratory specimens.
  • Performs receptionist and clerical duties, including matching and filing reports, documenting in medical records, and using the electronic medical record and scheduling system.
  • Facilitates timely appointments for patients and completes referrals and pre-authorizations as needed.
  • Collects co-payments.
  • Assists with the orientation of new personnel under the direction of the provider and/or site lead.
  • Executes and documents ongoing patient communication, prioritizing communications to the provider and responding to patient questions and requests.
  • Reinforces patient education as directed by the provider.
  • May inventory medical/surgical supplies and non-controlled pharmaceuticals to ensure adequate supply levels, verify expiration dates, and optimize organization.
  • May have access to non-controlled medication storage/supply areas and transport non-controlled medications.
  • Prepares and cleans instruments, following protocols for sterilization and disinfection.
  • Cleans and sets up examination rooms between patients using established infection prevention protocols.
  • Follows hand hygiene and appropriate infection prevention precautions.
  • Routinely inspects and observes the condition and operation of diagnostic equipment and instrumentation.
  • Actively participates in patient safety and quality improvement programs.
