Responsible for quality patient care under the direction of a physician or licensed healthcare provider in a clinical practice. Duties to include rooming patients, taking vitals and health history, documenting in an electronic medical record, giving injections and assisting with minor procedures. This role ensures accurate calibrations, cleaning, and scheduled maintenance of clinical/lab equipment as required by OSHA, DHEC, and UMA. The Medical Assistant maintains and reviews patient records, charts, and any other pertinent information, communicating as appropriate, and documents test and exam results. They communicate the plan of care to the patient, including the formal development of patient education materials as necessary. The role also involves maintaining exam room supplies, instruments, and the cleanliness of the patient care environment. Maintaining a timely flow of patients, assisting with scheduling appointments and referrals based on urgency and availability are key duties. The Medical Assistant screens patients for appropriate information and provides patient education as appropriate for diagnosis and treatment. They observe, record, and report the patient's physical and psychosocial condition, reactions to medication and treatments to the physician. Responding to and triaging phone calls, calling in orders appropriately as ordered by the physician, and instructing patients, as ordered by the physician, regarding treatment and/or medication are also responsibilities. The role includes monitoring and distribution of medication, including samples and controlled substances, triaging patients, and preparing them for physician exams and procedures. Assisting with exams, procedures, and treatments as necessary, and instructing patients in the collection of samples and tests are also part of the job. Administering prescribed treatments and tests as ordered by the physician is required.
