About The Position

Performs assigned patient care and related administrative duties under the direct supervision of physician(s), along with office and clerical duties as assigned by the office manager. Specific patient-care responsibilities are assigned by the supervising physician after competency is established. The role includes clinical, technical, administrative, and clerical work within the scope of the employee’s training and certification, including point-of-care testing.

Requirements

In South Carolina, complete an eligible medical assistant training program: a program accredited by CAAHEP, ABHES, or a U.S. Department of Education-recognized accrediting agency; an approved South Carolina Career and Technical Education Health Sciences Program; a military medical assisting program; a U.S. Department of Labor-approved Registered Apprenticeship; an employer-led program aligned with a nationally accredited certification exam; or Prisma Health Certification Institute’s Fast Track Certified Medical Assistant program.
Hold a job-related certification from one of the following: CMA (AAMA), RMA (AMT), CCMA (NHA), NCMA (NCCT), RMA (ARMA), NRCMA (NAHP), or RMA (AAMP).
No experience required.
CMAs certified before January 1, 2020, who have maintained certification without a lapse while working as a CMA are exempt from the education requirements.
Current South Carolina incumbents hired after January 1, 2020, without the specified education have until July 15, 2026, to complete the required state education requirements.

In Tennessee, completion of an accredited medical assistant program is preferred.

Responsibilities

Perform clinical, technical, administrative, and clerical duties as directed by a physician and within the scope of training and certification, including point-of-care testing.
Receive critical laboratory values, report them to the physician, and document notification in the medical record.
Prepare patients for examination and treatment; obtain and record chief complaints, current medications, vital signs, pain screening, and allergies; pend orders for physician signature.
Prepare examination and treatment rooms, maintain supplies and equipment, and clean or sterilize instruments as needed.
Assist physicians with examinations, tests, procedures, and office-based surgery; apply splints, casts, and dressings and remove sutures after demonstrating competency; report and assist during emergencies.
Prepare and administer medications and immunizations as ordered by the physician, after demonstrating competency and passing the medication-administration test.
Receive and return clinically related telephone calls after consulting with a physician or registered nurse about patient medical concerns.
Provide patient education and printed information at the physician’s request about diagnosis, self-care within assigned duties, health promotion, disease prevention, and community healthcare resources; document education in the medical record.
Document patient data and care in the medical record.
Complete medical insurance and related forms for physician review; communicate as needed with patients, referral sources, and payors between visits.
Complete patient registration, scheduling, billing, pre-authorization, and other assigned office or clerical duties.
Schedule tests and treatments as ordered by the physician.
Perform other duties as assigned.
