About The Position

The Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) provides patient care, in accordance with the Heartland Health Services (HHS) mission, strategic goals, federal and state laws and regulations, performance and outcome objectives, and accreditation standards. This role involves working with patients of all ages and maintaining positive working relationships with other departments to resolve operational problems and ensure effective resource utilization for quality patient care. The CMA is responsible for patient check-in, including taking vitals, documenting information, and completing electronic health records. They also assist clinicians during examinations, administer medications, perform treatments and procedures, and conduct waived lab testing within their scope of competency. Maintaining exam rooms, performing quality control, and ensuring proper care and maintenance of equipment and supplies are also key functions. The position supports clinic compliance with all applicable rules and regulations, including workplace safety and confidentiality, and participates in quality improvement efforts. Collaboration with clinical teams and support staff to develop patient-centered policies and procedures is expected. Maintaining patient information confidentiality is paramount. The CMA also reports building/equipment problems, performs clerical duties as assigned, and attends required meetings.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Completion of an accredited medical assistance certification program with current certification.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Demonstrates the knowledge and skills to provide patient services appropriate to the ages served.
  • Proficient computer skills for chart completion.
  • Strong interpersonal skills necessary to interact and enhance patient relations.

Nice To Haves

  • Basic Life Support certification must be obtained within the first 90 days of hire.

Responsibilities

  • Provides patient care in accordance with HHS mission, strategic goals, and regulatory standards.
  • Works with patients of all ages.
  • Maintains positive working relationships with other HHS departments.
  • Checks patients in by taking vitals, documenting pain, medications, allergies, and reason for visit.
  • Completes appropriate electronic health record templates.
  • Reviews patient charts for outstanding labs, x-ray results, or medical visits.
  • Reviews patient medications and pends refills.
  • Assists clinician during examinations.
  • Performs treatments, procedures, and waived lab testing within scope of competency.
  • Administers medications as ordered by clinicians.
  • Stocks and cleans exam rooms and equipment.
  • Performs quality control duties regularly.
  • Ensures proper care and maintenance of equipment and supplies.
  • Runs EHR reports per protocol.
  • Travels to various clinic locations as needed.
  • Supports clinic compliance with all applicable federal, state, local, and HHS rules and regulations.
  • Supports and is involved in HHS’s continuous quality improvement efforts.
  • Works in consultation with clinical teams to develop and implement policies and procedures.
  • Maintains and assures confidentiality of patient information.
  • Reports building/equipment problems through appropriate channels.
  • Performs clerical duties or department-related tasks as assigned by supervisor.
  • Attends all staff meetings, department meetings, and other required meetings.
