About The Position

As part of the Public Health Team and reporting to the Coordinator, Dental Health Services the Certified Dental Assistant in a regional role delivers preventive dental programs to the community by performing duties such as conducting cursory dental screenings of children, delivering community programs including dental health lessons/demonstrations, providing follow up with parents, school personnel, community services and other health professionals, and performing intra-oral procedures. Completes regional/provincial documentation as required. Coordinates patients and bus transportation arrangements for the Pediatric Program at the Faculty of Dentistry, University of British Columbia as required. Performs various administrative duties such as preparing reports, monitoring supply and equipment inventories, developing educational material, maintaining related records, and participating in program meetings and quality improvement.

Requirements

  • Grade 12.
  • Successful completion of a recognized Certified Dental Assistant Program and 1 year's recent related experience.
  • Registered and licensed with the College of Dental Surgeons of British Columbia.
  • Valid BC Drivers License and access to a vehicle for work purposes.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to deal with others effectively.
  • Ability to plan, organize, and prioritize.
  • Leadership and classroom management skills.
  • Ability to work with children.
  • Knowledge of techniques and standards of preventive and restorative clinical practice.
  • Physical ability to carry out the duties of the position.
  • Ability to operate related equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Provides dental health education and health promotion to children/adults/families in various settings such as classrooms and groups by performing duties such as developing educational content of lesson plans, liaising with appropriate personnel to schedule sessions, organizing work schedules for school and community programs, and delivering lessons and demonstrations.
  • Conducts cursory dental screenings of children by following the BC Dental Screening Manual protocol. Provides self-applied or other preventive material or clinical services where indicated, such as fluoride varnish within the Bylaws of the College of Dental Surgeons of BC and program guidelines.
  • Conducts follow up in accordance with the guidelines of the BC Dental Screening Manual by contacting parents, school personnel, community services and other health professionals, providing information to clients to assist in attaining subsidy assistance, referring client to other community services and advocating for clients to obtain dental treatment. Responds to inquiries.
  • Completes documentation in accordance with the BC Dental Screening Manual, regional policies, procedures, guidelines/timelines and the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act.
  • Performs duties related to the Pediatric Program at the Faculty of Dentistry, University of British Columbia such as determining eligibility, scheduling and confirming clients, establishing and maintaining the wait list, and coordinating bus transportation, as required.
  • Performs administrative duties such as completing computerized records and reports, inputting data in accordance with established procedures, and consolidating findings of screenings and other surveys.
  • Prepares all materials, supplies, dental instruments and other equipment for use in screening programs. Monitors supply and equipment inventories and orders materials as required.
  • Participates in program meetings by attending meetings and/or making presentations and identifies areas for quality improvement.
  • Cleans and sterilizes dental equipment and instruments for use when required.
  • Performs clinical duties in accordance with the Bylaws of the College of Dental Surgeons of BC and program guidelines for special projects as required.
  • Assists with the orientation and mentoring of new staff.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
