About The Position

The United States Coast Guard Academy (USCGA) requires contractor support to provide certified and licensed Athletic Trainer(s) and qualified Strength and Conditioning Coach(es) to support the Academy’s Health and Physical Education (HPE) curriculum, varsity teams, and club sports programs. The contractor will furnish all personnel, supervision, and services necessary to deliver a full range of athletic training and strength and conditioning support. This includes injury prevention, evaluation, treatment, rehabilitation, and emergency response; development and implementation of evidence-based strength and conditioning programs; instruction and oversight during physical training sessions; coordination with medical personnel, coaches, and the HPE department; documentation and record-keeping; and support for on-campus and off-campus competitions or training events. The objective is to provide a comprehensive, integrated athletic performance and injury management program that ensures the health, safety, and physical readiness of Coast Guard Academy cadets, developing them into highly fit and healthy Coast Guard Officers.

Requirements

  • Current Board of Certification (BOC) qualification as required by the National Athletic Trainers’ Association (NATA).
  • Minimum of one year of collegiate experience as an athletic trainer.
  • A current, unrestricted license to practice athletic trainer services in the State of Connecticut.
  • Current certification in BLS for the Health Care Provider issued by the American Heart Association (AHA) or the American Red Cross (ARC).
  • Malpractice Insurance: Coverage of not less than $1,000,000.00 per occurrence.
  • No adverse information on file with the National Practitioners Data Bank (NPDB).
  • Must be physically capable of performing all required athletic training services.

Responsibilities

  • Provide competition support services for assigned home and away athletic contests, including NCAA contests, non-traditional games, and scrimmages.
  • Provide pre-competition medical setup and athlete treatment, on-site injury evaluation and care, and post-competition documentation and follow-up.
  • Provide athletic training support services for athletic training practices for all varsity sports.
  • Provide athlete physical rehabilitation in accordance with Medical Clinic prescribed recommendations or treatment plan.
  • Conduct physical injury assessments for athletes and refer to Academy Clinic if deemed necessary.
  • Develop additional pre- and post-injury physical rehabilitation, treatment and/or exercise programs for athletes.
  • Provide athletic training treatments on Sundays for a three-hour period during the Fall and Spring seasons.
  • Provide athletic training support services for health and physical education (HPE) classes and physical fitness exams (PFE).
  • Provide first aid during Health and Physical Education classes as required.
  • Assess cadet injuries and refer to Academy Medical Clinic as required.
  • Provide on-site medical support during bi-annual PFEs and monthly make-up exams.
  • Conduct heat index monitoring in conjunction with the Academy medical staff as needed.
  • Ensure that cadets have access to adequate hydration during PFE events.
  • Provide athletic training services during the USCGA’s eight-week Swab Summer training program.
  • Document athlete treatment in the provided Electronic Medical Record (EMR) system.
  • Provide monthly treatment reports from the EMR system to the Head Athletic Trainer and COR.
