About The Position

The City of Burnaby is looking for individuals with a passion in Ceramics to join the technician teams at the Shadbolt Center for the Arts, Christine Sinclair Community Centre, and the Bonsor Recreation Complex. As a Ceramic Technician, you will operate ceramic arts equipment and oversee specialized studios during the seasonal programs. You will provide technical expertise in operating, maintaining and firing the electric kiln, maintain the ceramic studios in operational condition, monitor cleanliness and security of equipment and tools while assisting with maintenance tasks on the equipment. You will ensure the proper and safe usage of equipment and materials and while ensuring that policies, procedures, regulations, and safety precautions are adhered to. Other responsibilities for this position may include instructing children’s and adult classes, teaching multiple ceramic methods including hand building and sculpture. Performs related work as required.

Requirements

  • Completed a two-year diploma in Fine Arts with ceramic specialty plus related technical and instructional experience, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Sound knowledge of methods, practices, techniques, materials, tools, and equipment used in the operation of ceramic studios, programs, and firing kilns.
  • Sound knowledge of policies, codes, and regulations governing ceramics, as well as hazards and safety precautions related to work.
  • Knowledge of teaching methods and effective communication skills focusing on instruction of safety and ceramic skills when teaching groups of students and artists.
  • Ability to support users engaged in ceramic programs.
  • Communicate effectively orally and in writing.
  • Deal effectively with a variety of internal and external contacts.
  • Skill in the use and care of a variety of tools and equipment used in the work.
  • Physical ability to lift to 50lbs.
  • WHMIS Certification.
  • First Aid Certificate.

Benefits

  • $34.25 per hour with 12% in lieu of benefits
