About The Position

This role is responsible for providing technical support services in a hospital central sterile department, operating room, or ambulatory surgery center. Key duties include managing equipment, instruments, and supplies, ensuring their proper functioning and sterilization, and maintaining a clean and organized work environment. The position also involves assisting with patient preparation and discharge, supporting the surgical team, and adhering to strict decontamination and sterilization protocols. Effective communication and participation in quality improvement initiatives are essential.

Requirements

  • Central sterile or operating room experience required.
  • Current BLS.
  • Ability to organize equipment, instruments and supplies.
  • Ability to adhere to the work schedule and manage time appropriately.
  • Ability to handle stress associated with prioritizing multiple tasks.
  • Working knowledge and experience in a hospital central sterile department, operating room or ambulatory surgery center.
  • Knowledge of instrument names and their care and handling procedures.
  • Sterilization and disinfection knowledge.
  • Ability to provide proof of identity and right to work in the United States.

Responsibilities

  • Anticipates the need for equipment and supplies.
  • Selects equipment and supplies in an organized, cost effective and timely manner.
  • Assures all equipment is functioning before use and removes any malfunctioning equipment.
  • Demonstrates skill in appropriate use of instruments and equipment.
  • Operates mechanical, electrical and air-powered equipment according to manufacturer’s instructions.
  • Assures emergency equipment and supplies are available at all times.
  • Keeps surgical suites clean, tidy, free of soiled equipment and supplies, and properly stocked.
  • Transports patients to and from and within the facility.
  • Assists with preoperative patient preparation and postoperative patient discharge (e.g. changing clothes, providing nourishment).
  • Assists with OR turnover and preparation of sterile supplies (e.g. opening, case pulling).
  • Cleans and restocks anesthesia supplies as assigned.
  • With additional training, may assist the surgical team as a second scrub person.
  • Follow decontamination and sterilization per manufacturer instructions and facility policies and procedures.
  • Maintains cleaning and sterilization logs per facility policy.
  • Listens respectfully, gives feedback directly, honestly and talks with others to clarify differences.
  • Effectively communicates and interacts with patients (using translation services when needed), their family, and other external and internal clients (including fellow employees) from diverse backgrounds.
