Requirements

  • High school diploma/GED required; no experience needed.
  • Grandfathered technicians without certification must complete 10 hours of annual continuing education; certified staff must complete 10–12 hours per certifying body requirements.
  • New hires in PA and NY must obtain certification within 18 months (MD excluded).
  • Must be able to stand for full shifts and lift/push/pull up to 35 lbs.
  • Accepted certifications: Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution or Certified Registered Central Service Technician (HSPA).
  • Act 34 clearance required.

Nice To Haves

  • Enrollment in an accredited Surgical Tech/Sterile Processing program or 1 year of UPMC experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Support quality and safety by applying performance‑improvement practices and sharing best‑practice insights across the department.
  • Communicate clearly with care teams, document thoroughly, and use critical thinking to support safe, effective patient care.

  • Follow all sterile processing, decontamination, infection control, and safety standards.
  • Clean, decontaminate, inspect, assemble, and sterilize instruments and equipment using both manual and mechanical methods.
  • Prepare surgical trays, set up case carts, maintain inventory, and troubleshoot sterilization equipment.
  • Work efficiently with attention to cost‑effective use of time and materials.
  • Participate actively as a team member and uphold UPMC’s Core Values through reliable, compassionate, and detail‑driven work.
  • Perform additional duties as needed to support patient care and department operations.
