Requirements

• High school diploma/GED required
• No experience needed
• Must be able to stand for full shifts
• Must be able to lift/push/pull up to 35 lbs
• Act 34 clearance required

Nice To Haves

• Enrollment in an accredited Surgical Tech/Sterile Processing program
• 1 year of UPMC experience preferred
• Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution (HSPA) certification
• Certified Registered Central Service Technician (HSPA) certification
• New hires in PA and NY must obtain certification within 18 months (MD excluded)
• Grandfathered technicians without certification must complete 10 hours of annual continuing education
• Certified staff must complete 10–12 hours per certifying body requirements

Responsibilities

• Support quality and safety by applying performance‑improvement practices and sharing best‑practice insights across the department.
• Communicate clearly with care teams, document thoroughly, and use critical thinking to support safe, effective patient care.
• Build strong, positive working relationships, mentor colleagues, and contribute to a healthy, respectful workplace culture.
• Take initiative in your own professional development and help elevate the skills of others through knowledge‑sharing.
• Follow all sterile processing, decontamination, infection control, and safety standards.
• Clean, decontaminate, inspect, assemble, and sterilize instruments and equipment using both manual and mechanical methods.
• Prepare surgical trays, set up case carts, maintain inventory, and troubleshoot sterilization equipment.
• Work efficiently with attention to cost‑effective use of time and materials.
• Participate actively as a team member and uphold UPMC’s Core Values through reliable, compassionate, and detail‑driven work.
• Perform additional duties as needed to support patient care and department operations.
