About The Position

UPMC Mercy is expanding and seeking detail-oriented professionals to join its Sterile Processing team. This is a hands-on role that directly supports surgical excellence and patient care. The position involves cleaning, assembling, and sterilizing surgical instruments and equipment, and supporting major hospital initiatives like OR upgrades and Pavilion relocation to ensure safe and efficient operations.

Requirements

  • Prior healthcare experience is required
  • Solid attendance and professionalism
  • High school diploma/GED or equivalent with no experience -OR- Currently enrolled in an Accredited Surgical Technician/Sterile Processing Program Preferred -OR-1 year of experience within UPMC
  • Must be able to stand for all shift hours
  • Must be able to pick up, push, pull etc. 35 pounds
  • Certification required for our PA and NY facilities (MD facilities are excluded)
  • New employees in our PA and NY facilities (MD is excluded) will have 18 months from date of hire to obtain required certification
  • Act 34

Nice To Haves

  • Certification is a plus, but not required
  • Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution or Certified Registered Central Service Technician with Healthcare Sterile Processing Association

Responsibilities

  • Decontaminate and sterilize instruments using manual and mechanical methods
  • Assemble surgical trays and case carts per established protocols
  • Monitor and document sterilization parameters
  • Maintain and troubleshoot sterilization equipment
  • Collaborate with team members and communicate effectively
  • Participate in performance improvement and ongoing education
