The Central Service Technician performs a wide array of duties to provide sterile instrumentation and trays to the Department of Surgery and other hospital departments. This role works under the direction of the Sr. Technician for Central Services or Operating Room Management. The position involves decontaminating and inspecting surgical instruments, maintaining equipment, cleaning and decontaminating reusable patient equipment, assembling instrument trays, operating sterilizers, performing biological monitoring, organizing paperwork for reporting, cleaning case carts, and reprocessing scopes. The technician also prepares loaner/consignment instruments, receives and documents items, inspects and decontaminates instruments, assembles instrumentation, sterilizes and delivers to the OR, and delivers additional trays and supplies. Housekeeping functions to keep the area neat and organized are also part of the role, as is retrieving soiled carts/instruments and cleaning sterilizer chambers and carts. Cases are picked, including add-ons, and case supplies and equipment are organized for use by the OR Circulator and Technician. Reprocessing and storing of assigned scopes, including gastroscopes, colonoscopies, bronchoscopes, and other flexible or rigid scopes, is also a key responsibility. The technician must follow the chain of care for communication of issues and perform other duties as assigned.
