About The Position

Under general direction, supervision, and frequent review, sets up and operates centerless grinding machines to grind external or internal cylindrical and tapered surfaces, angles, contours, and other shapes on metal workpieces to blueprint specifications and exacting tolerances. Determines the sequence of grinding operations, amount of cut, wheel dressing, speeds, feeds, and other process settings. May rework parts produced. This is an on-site, full-time hourly manufacturing role on the third shift, Sunday through Thursday, 9:00 p.m. to 5:30 a.m. The position requires maintaining production records and documentation, verifying work against specifications, maintaining machines, and contributing to team efforts to improve production processes, productivity, and quality. Work takes place in a machine-shop environment with noise, temperature fluctuations, repetitive tasks, cutting oils, metalworking fluids, and airborne particles. The role requires physical work including lifting up to 50 pounds, standing or sitting for periods exceeding 15 minutes, and handling parts and equipment. Employment is contingent upon meeting U.S. Person or government authorization requirements for access to export-controlled technical data or hardware, successfully completing a drug screen, and satisfactory reference/background checks, as well as signing the specified agreements. The expected pay range is $30.41 to $36.95 per hour, with compensation dependent on factors including qualifications, skills, experience, competencies, and geographic location.

Requirements

  • Demonstrated ability to read and write English at the level required for shop documents and computer software entry and processing.
  • Ability to apply mathematical operations involving fractions, decimals, trigonometry, and geometry as required by machining operations.
  • Generally equivalent to a journeyman trade-school graduate or equivalent.
  • One to three years of work experience, or equivalent skills and knowledge, in setting up and operating grinding machines, tools, and equipment comparable to those used by the Company.
  • Ability to read precision measuring instruments such as calipers and micrometers and engineering diagrams used in grinding operations.
  • Familiarity with computerized production-results input systems.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and perform the physical demands of machine setup and operation, including hand-feeding parts, manipulating controls, reaching, bending, stretching, and standing or sitting for periods exceeding 15 minutes.
  • Ability to interpret complex technical blueprints and documentation, draw valid conclusions from abstract and concrete variables, and organize workflow efficiently.
  • Close attention to detail and ability to read precision instruments and visually inspect workpieces for quality.
  • Ability to use appropriate protective safety wear and equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Set up and operate various grinding machines under supervision.
  • Mount and dress grinding and regulating wheels to task specifications.
  • Set grinding speeds, feed rates, and spacings; select abrasive wheels and holding fixtures; and determine the number of passes needed for efficient operation.
  • Measure, mark, and scribe stock for grinding, and plan the sequence of operations.
  • Apply shop theory and practices to grinding operations and verify dimensions, alignments, and clearances against specifications.
  • Use precision measuring instruments such as calipers, micrometers, and gauges to inspect work and achieve tolerances of ±0.0005.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, sketches, models, descriptions, and verbal orders to determine dimensions, tolerances, and final part configurations.
  • May perform first-article inspection and rework parts as needed.
  • Record counts, complete process documentation, maintain daily production logs, and keep interim records for subassemblies, materials, tooling, and rework.
  • Participate in team problem-solving, team-building, and other activities to improve production processes, productivity, and quality; assist other cell members as required.
