Centerless Grinder Setup Technician 1st & 2nd shift

MinebeaMitsumi Companies•Chatsworth, CA

About The Position

The Centerless Grinder Setup Technician sets up and operates through-feed centerless grinding equipment to produce precision bearing components to specified dimensions and characteristics while meeting quality standards. The technician owns each setup from first piece through production runs and supports operations in the side lap and centerless department. The role requires setting up short- or long-run work, manually feeding parts at a steady rate without gaps or pushing faster than the machine’s set through-feed rate, and following established procedures, verbal instructions, setup cards, layout sheets, process requirements, and drawings. The technician mounts, balances, and dresses grinding and regulating wheels; replaces worn tooling; makes machine adjustments; and inspects parts using precision measuring equipment. Responsibilities also include diagnosing and correcting grinding problems, completing records, conducting changeovers, documenting setup parameters, training and supporting operators, and maintaining a clean and safe work area. Candidates must have a high school diploma or equivalent and at least three years of hands-on centerless grinding setup experience, including through-feed grinding. The role requires the ability to hand-feed a continuous column of parts consistently and to diagnose common through-feed geometry, surface, operational, and manual-feeding problems. Candidates must be eligible to work under U.S. export control requirements as a U.S. citizen, U.S. permanent resident, or person with asylum or refugee status in the U.S. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform essential functions. The duties listed are not exhaustive, and additional tasks may be assigned.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • At least 3 years of hands-on centerless grinding setup experience, including required through-feed grinding experience.
  • Ability to hand-feed a continuous column of parts at a constant through-feed rate without separation or over-pushing.
  • Ability to independently set up equipment and hold tolerances of ±0.0001 inch (2.5 µm) or tighter on size and roundness.
  • Ability to read, reference, and interpret written and verbal instructions and follow established standard procedures.
  • Basic mathematical calculation skills and understanding of standard and metric systems.
  • Working knowledge of GD&T, including roundness and RA.
  • Ability to maintain production levels and quality standards, recognize and report irregularities, and maintain records subject to audited inspections.
  • Clear communication skills and ability to train others.
  • Ability to diagnose and correct through-feed geometry, surface, operational, and manual-feeding problems, including out-of-round parts, taper, barrel or hourglass shape, size variation or drift, chatter marks, burn, and discoloration.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen, U.S. permanent resident, or have asylum or refugee status in the U.S. to comply with U.S. export control laws and regulations.
  • Ability to meet the position’s physical requirements, which may include standing, walking, bending, reaching, grabbing, twisting, carrying, pushing, and pulling, and lifting up to 40 pounds.

Nice To Haves

  • Setup experience on Nissin centerless grinders.
  • Experience grinding precision bearing components such as rings, rollers, or pins.
  • Vocational or technical certificate in machining or grinding.
  • Experience setting work center height, blade top angle, and regulating wheel inclination to prevent lobing and control through-feed rate.
  • Experience using structured centerless troubleshooting methods or references.

Responsibilities

  • Set up through-feed centerless grinders for short- or long-run work to meet size, roundness, and finish specifications, including adjusting work blade height, regulating wheel angle and speed, and guide or fence alignment.
  • Manually feed parts into the grinder at a steady, controlled rate, keeping parts butted end-to-end without gaps and never exceeding the machine’s set through-feed rate.
  • Follow established procedures, verbal instructions, setup cards, layout sheets, certified processes, engineered cycles, and drawing requirements.
  • Mount, balance, and dress grinding and regulating wheels; replace worn tooling; and adjust machines as needed.
  • Use micrometers, a microscope, OD dial gages, and fixed and adjustable gages to set up equipment and inspect work.
  • Review the calibration of measuring equipment.
  • Diagnose and correct grinding difficulties, including chatter, burn, lobing, taper, feed marks, size drift, out-of-round conditions, barrel or hourglass shape, and discoloration.
  • Maintain required records and report unusual conditions to the assigned leader.
  • Perform changeovers efficiently and document setup parameters for repeatable setups.
  • Train and support operators on machine operation, gauging, and wheel changes.
  • Maintain a clean and orderly work area, follow safety rules and regulations, and conform to OSHA regulations.
  • Move materials, parts, and containers as required to complete job duties.
  • Maintain production levels and quality standards, recognize and report irregularities, and communicate clearly with others.
