Cellular Biologist III
About The Position
The Cellular Biologist III will join the Oncology lab, working hands-on with patient-derived organoids to support research on new and more effective cancer treatments. This role works directly under the supervision of the Senior Research Scientist and alongside a team of experienced cellular biologists and cellular specialists. The Cellular Biologist III will interact with an interdisciplinary team of stem cell biologists, data scientists, automation engineers, and software developers within an advanced automated platform for cell biology. Duties include project planning, developing methodologies, conducting automated procedures, modifying and updating procedures, data collection and analysis, creating and revising documentation, contributing to reports and manuscripts, and providing communication and instruction. The role requires strong mental concentration and visual attention. The Cellular Biologist III is expected to lead and mentor junior technical staff and departmental assistants. Flexible shifts, including evenings, weekends, and/or holidays, may be required depending on research project and laboratory operations demands.
Requirements
- Experience with human/mammalian cell culture, 3D culture systems, and iPSC culture.
- Broad expertise in cell and molecular biology techniques.
- Demonstrated ability to develop and improve biological workflows/processes, or have contributed to the development of automation/software tools.
- Demonstrated ability in coordinating and performing multiple, concurrent assignments across highly complex workflows in multi-faceted projects.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and interact with all individuals in a productive, professional, and positive manner.
- 5 years of experience required.
- Bachelor’s Degree required.
Nice To Haves
- Experience with liquid handling automation is preferred.
- Master’s Degree preferred.
Responsibilities
- Perform, monitor, and mentor other biologists in performing automated and manual cell culture and related activities.
- Set direction for workflows; serve as technical authority; resolve complex deviations; drive optimization and innovation.
- Exercise expert judgment in designing experimental or production modifications and be responsible for high-level troubleshooting.
- Handle and process primary materials, such as tumor tissues and blood samples.
- Culture tissue-derived organoids, fibroblasts, and induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs).
- Perform all necessary protocols for organoid derivation, fibroblast expansion, iPSC expansion and QC, and differentiations on robotic platform(s) or manually.
- Contribute to molecular, phenotypic, imaging assays, and other in vitro assays such as automated drug screenings using 3D organoid systems.
- Contribute to the design and optimize organoid co-culture protocols to model the tumor and tissue microenvironments.
- Store and withdraw specimens from liquid nitrogen and freezers.
- Prepare media and reagents required for daily work.
- Work closely with the laboratory operations team to ensure reagents/consumables inventory is accurately and efficiently supplied.
- Plan and monitor resources needed to operate; maintain inventory control; coordinate space and field questions.
- Participate in the monitoring and tracking of resources/expenditures across projects.
- Document results; identify problems, troubleshoot, and analyze variations observed and reported in regular testing protocols.
- Lead modification, refinement, and adaptation of techniques and procedures, partnering with engineers and other staff to define and implement large-scale improvements.
- Provide documentation and feedback through the creation and modification of SOPs, filing of tickets to software and automation teams, and leading inter- and intra-team meetings.
- Lead the exchange of information through demonstration and instruction.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
