CED Faculty Scholar

LLNL•Livermore, CA

About The Position

Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory’s Computational Engineering Division is seeking a faculty member for a six-month collaborative research assignment of mutual interest, intended to further the scholar’s research goals. The work includes research in optimization methods for medium- and long-term electricity-market simulation. Selection is based on outstanding scholarship and research expertise that overlaps with the Laboratory’s mission. Applicants should include a cover letter and CV. The Faculty Scholar will contribute expertise in power-system scheduling, risk modeling, electricity-market pricing, ancillary services, or capacity expansion planning. The role involves theoretical and simulation studies, multidisciplinary collaboration, preparation of scientific reports, and presentations to internal and external scientific audiences. The appointment is temporary, and the candidate must be available to start between March 2027 and August 2027.

Requirements

  • Must be a faculty member or scientist affiliated with an accredited institution.
  • Must have a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Operations Research, Applied Mathematics, or equivalent demonstrated knowledge.
  • Significant experience modeling risk and risk-averse behavior in electricity markets and power systems.
  • Analytical skills to solve complex research problems and make decisions independently.
  • Advanced communication skills to author technical and scientific reports, publications, and invited papers, and to deliver scientific presentations.
  • Ability to work effectively independently and as part of a team, with minimal supervision in a goal-oriented environment.
  • Must be available to start between March 2027 and August 2027.

Responsibilities

  • Provide expertise in one or more areas: short-term power-system scheduling, risk quantification and modeling in power systems, electricity-market pricing mechanisms, ancillary-services modeling, or capacity-expansion planning.
  • Collaborate with technical area leaders, project leaders, and program management in a multidisciplinary team to achieve research objectives.
  • Perform theoretical and simulation studies of wholesale pricing impacts and mechanisms for capturing beyond-horizon constraints in short-term electricity markets, including large thermal commitment, storage, and hydro management.
  • Author complex scientific reports and deliver presentations to internal and external scientific audiences.
  • Participate in Laboratory activities to provide and gain exposure to ongoing research.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Benefits

  • Holiday pay
  • Sick leave accrual
  • Individual 401(k) contributions
