CED Faculty Scholar

LLNL•Livermore, CA

About The Position

Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory has an opening in the Computational Engineering Division within the Engineering Principal Associate Directorate for a faculty member to take part in a six-month collaborative research assignment of mutual interest. The assignment is intended to further the scholar’s research goals and provide research in optimization methods for medium- and long-term electricity-market simulation. Selection is based on outstanding scholarship and research expertise that overlaps with the Lab’s mission. The scholar will contribute expertise in electricity-market and power-system topics, collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, and conduct theoretical and simulation studies of wholesale pricing impacts and mechanisms for capturing beyond-horizon constraints in short-term electricity markets. The role also involves producing scientific reports and presentations and participating in laboratory research activities.

Requirements

  • Must be available to start between March 2027 and August 2027.
  • Must be a faculty member or scientist affiliated with an accredited institution.
  • Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Operations Research, Applied Mathematics, or equivalent demonstrated knowledge.
  • Significant experience modeling risk and risk-averse behavior in electricity markets and power systems.
  • Analytical skills to solve complex research problems and make decisions independently.
  • Advanced communication skills to author technical and scientific reports, publications, and invited papers, and deliver scientific presentations.
  • Experience working effectively independently and in a team, with minimal supervision in a goal-oriented environment.
  • Must be eligible to access the Laboratory in compliance with NDAA Section 3112 restrictions.

Responsibilities

  • Provide expertise in one or more areas: short-term power-system scheduling, including unit commitment and optimal power flow; risk quantification and modeling in power systems; electricity-market pricing mechanisms; ancillary-services modeling; or capacity-expansion planning.
  • Collaborate with technical area leaders, project leaders, and program management in a multidisciplinary team to achieve research objectives.
  • Perform theoretical and simulation studies of wholesale pricing impacts and mechanisms to capture beyond-horizon constraints, such as large thermal commitment, storage, and hydro management, in short-term electricity markets.
  • Author complex scientific reports and deliver presentations to internal and external scientific audiences.
  • Participate in laboratory activities to provide and gain exposure to ongoing research.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Benefits

  • Holiday pay
  • Sick leave accrual
  • Individual 401(k) contributions
