Drivers operate heavy-duty trucks equipped with front-, side-, or rear-end load-lift attachments, depending on the line of business and vehicle. They transport material to disposal, transfer, or recycling facilities when trucks reach legal load capacity. Commercial Drivers pick up containers filled with waste or recyclable material; containers may weigh more than 1,000 pounds and may need to be maneuvered to a pickup staging area. Drivers navigate high-traffic and congested roadways, driveways, alleyways, and lots, and must perform skilled backing maneuvers. Residential Drivers collect household waste and recyclable material while safely operating in residential environments. Roll-off Drivers prepare, load, and transport large mobile open-top and compactor containers from customer locations, including on industrial routes and in tight overhead environments. Drivers operate safely and in compliance with company rules, OSHA and DOT requirements, and applicable laws. They inspect and document vehicle condition, report safety or service issues and incidents, attend required training and meetings, follow assigned routes, complete end-of-day documentation, and work with operations staff to improve route efficiency and meet customer needs. The role is safety-sensitive and may require drug and alcohol testing. Drivers are described as being home at night and on weekends. Advancement opportunities and paid on-the-job training are available.
