About The Position

Minnesota State Community and Technical College (M State) is seeking a part-time CDL Instructor to provide Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) training through Workforce Development Solutions. This position is primarily located in Detroit Lakes, MN, with occasional travel to Wadena, MN and Moorhead, MN. The instructor will deliver classroom, range, and on-the-road instruction in accordance with federal (FMCSA), state, and program standards, supporting students in developing the knowledge and skills necessary to meet Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) requirements and successfully enter the commercial driving workforce.

Requirements

  • Valid Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL)
  • Demonstrated (5 years) experience with a Class A CDL
  • Knowledge of FMCSA regulations and CDL training standards
  • Ability to deliver both classroom and hands-on instruction
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work successfully with people of diverse backgrounds including a sensitivity to their needs and concerns and a demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with internal and external constituents
  • Must be able to accept work in the U.S. by the day employment begins.

Nice To Haves

  • Minimum of 15+ years of experience driving with a Class A CDL
  • Experience working with adult learners
  • Familiarity with ELDT requirements and third-party testing processes

Responsibilities

  • Deliver classroom instruction in accordance with FMCSA and state standards.
  • Conduct hands-on CDL training in range and on-the-road settings.
  • Prepare and organize instructional materials for CDL training courses.
  • Adapt teaching methods to support diverse learning styles and skill levels.
  • Monitor and assess student progress and skill development.
  • Provide constructive feedback on driving techniques and safety practices.
  • Support students in meeting Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) requirements.
  • Communicate student concerns or issues to program staff.
  • Ensure adherence to safety protocols during all training activities.
  • Follow all federal, state, and third-party testing guidelines as required.
  • Stay current with CDL regulations and industry best practices.
  • Maintain accurate training records and attendance documentation.
  • Submit required reports and documentation in a timely manner.
  • Complete and submit timesheets, meal, and mileage reimbursements.
  • Use M State email for official communications and respond within 48 hours.
  • Operate and maintain training vehicles in coordination with program staff.
  • Participate in program-related activities, including orientation sessions.
  • Maintain a neat and professional appearance.
  • Demonstrate professionalism in all interactions.
  • Maintain confidentiality of participant data and program materials.
