About The Position

This position is with the Department of Homeland Security, within U.S. Customs and Border Protection, Office of Commissioner, Washington, DC. This position will be filled on a temporary basis not-to-exceed (NTE) one (1) year, with possible extensions for an additional four (4) years in one (1) year increments. Relocation expenses will be paid. This position starts at a salary of $125,158.00 (GS-13, Step 1) to $162,708.00 (GS-13, Step 10) with promotion potential to $162,708 (GS-13, Step 10).

Requirements

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen to apply for this position.
  • Males born after 12/31/1959 must be registered with Selective Service.
  • Primary U.S. residency for at least three of the last five years.
  • All pre-employment processes will be conducted in English.
  • May be required to pass a background investigation and/or polygraph.
  • Must have taken the required CBP Officer Promotional Assessment component and have a passing Total Score.
  • Must possess the Ability to operate a Government Owned Vehicle.
  • A valid, non-restricted driver's license is required.
  • Must have 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level, performing duties such as: Provides CBP Officer and Special Response Team (SRT) advisory support to Office of the Commissioner leadership on inspection, enforcement, protective operations, and special operations issues. Plans, coordinates, and supports protective security operations for the Commissioner and designated senior leadership during official travel, site visits, meetings, and public engagements. Conducts advance security assessments, route reconnaissance, threat analysis, and vulnerability assessments to identify and mitigate risks related to protective movements and operational activities. Integrates CBP inspection and enforcement authorities into protective and special operations, including screening, secondary examination, access control, enforcement, and contraband interdiction measures. Maintains operational readiness and supports enforcement activities by preparing reports, coordinating evidence handling, identifying training needs, and monitoring inspection, protective, and tactical equipment.
  • Must meet initial and continuing qualifications in the use of firearms.
  • Must meet all qualification requirements, including education if applicable to this position, subject to verification at any stage of the application process.
  • Must meet all applicable Time in Grade requirements (current federal employees must have served 52 weeks at the next lower grade or equivalent grade band in the federal service) by 10/13/2026.
  • Applicants who have not successfully completed the SRT training will be rated ineligible for the position. A certificate of completion must be provided with your application.
  • You may be required to successfully complete the training requirement as a condition of employment.
  • Must maintain access to all data systems necessary for duty execution.

Responsibilities

  • Provides CBP enforcement and tactical operations support to Office of the Commissioner leadership on CBP operations, initiatives, and critical border security issues.
  • Plans, coordinates, and supports complex border enforcement and interdiction operations, including activities related to surveillance, illegal entry, smuggling routes, and emerging border security threats.
  • Conducts operational assessments, route reconnaissance, and threat analysis to identify risks, vulnerabilities, and operational gaps in border environments and recommends appropriate courses of action.
  • Supports protective security operations for the Commissioner during official travel, site visits, and engagements, particularly in high-risk border environments.
  • Maintains operational readiness and supports border safety initiatives, including emergency response, search and rescue, tactical training, firearms proficiency, and specialized equipment readiness.
  • Provides CBP Officer and Special Response Team (SRT) advisory support to Office of the Commissioner leadership on inspection, enforcement, protective operations, and special operations issues.
  • Plans, coordinates, and supports protective security operations for the Commissioner and designated senior leadership during official travel, site visits, meetings, and public engagements.
  • Conducts advance security assessments, route reconnaissance, threat analysis, and vulnerability assessments to identify and mitigate risks related to protective movements and operational activities.
