About The Position

This position is with the Department of Homeland Security, within U.S. Customs and Border Protection, Office of Commissioner, located in Washington DC. The primary and paramount function of this position is to serve as a senior Border Patrol Agent and tactical operations operator, providing advanced border enforcement expertise and high-level advisory support to the Border Patrol Tactical Unit (BORTAC) and the Office of the Commissioner. The incumbent plans and advises on complex, multi-sector border enforcement and interdiction operations in support of Commissioner-directed priorities and field engagements; conducts multi-sector threat, risk, and vulnerability assessments focused on illegal entry and smuggling routes; integrates U.S. Border Patrol enforcement tactics, intelligence, and capabilities into tactical operations directed or overseen by the Office of the Commissioner; and develops and supports Border Patrol safety, training, and readiness initiatives related to BORTAC operations. This position starts at a salary of $147,899.00 (GS-14, Step 1) to $192,275.00 (GS-14, Step 10).

  • Possess 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level, performing duties such as: Planning, coordinating, or advising on complex border enforcement, interdiction, or tactical operations across multiple operational areas. Reviewing operational reports, intelligence products, law enforcement information, or field feedback to identify smuggling patterns, vulnerabilities, gaps, or emerging threats. Recommending adjustments to enforcement postures, patrol patterns, checkpoint operations, interdiction tactics, surveillance activities, or resource alignment. Coordinating with Border Patrol sectors, stations, specialized units, CBP components, or law enforcement partners to support multi-jurisdictional operations or tactical initiatives. Preparing briefings, assessments, reports, or recommended courses of action related to border enforcement, tactical readiness, protective security, or officer and public safety.
  • Specialized Experience in law enforcement or other responsible work that demonstrated the ability to: Make arrests and exercise sound judgment in the use of firearms; deal effectively with individuals or groups of persons in a courteous, tactful manner in connection with law enforcement matters; analyze information rapidly and make prompt decisions or take prompt and appropriate law enforcement action in light of applicable laws, court decisions, and sound law enforcement procedures; and develop and maintain contact with a network of informants.
  • Must be proficient in the Spanish language. (i.e., able to speak and read in Spanish).
  • Must have successfully completed the BORTAC Selection and Training Course to be considered for this position.
  • Must possess the ability to operate a Government Owned Vehicle.
  • A valid, non-restricted driver's license is required.
  • Must be willing and available to work rotating shifts.
  • May also be rotated between assignments and duty locations.
  • Could be required to work overtime on a daily basis and will be compensated up to an additional 25% of your base pay in accordance with the Border Patrol Agent Pay Reform Act of 2014.
  • Overnight travel may be required on a regular and recurring basis.
  • Must be able to meet all qualification requirements, including education if applicable to this position, subject to verification at any stage of the application process
  • Must meet all applicable Time in Grade requirements (current federal employees must have served 52 weeks at the next lower grade or equivalent grade band in the federal service) by 10/13/2026.

Responsibilities

  • Provides senior Border Patrol enforcement and BORTAC advisory support to Office of the Commissioner leadership on complex, multi-sector Border Patrol operations, tactical initiatives, and critical border security issues.
  • Reviews and synthesizes operational reports, intelligence products, law enforcement information, and field feedback to identify smuggling routes, recurring patterns, vulnerabilities, operational gaps, and emerging threats.
  • Recommends enforcement concepts, tactical security postures, patrol patterns, checkpoint operations, interdiction tactics, surveillance activities, and resource alignment to improve border security operations.
  • Supports protective security operations for the Commissioner during official travel, site visits, and engagements in high-risk border environments by conducting advance assessments, route reconnaissance, and border-focused risk reviews.
  • Supports Border Patrol safety, training, and readiness initiatives related to BORTAC and Commissioner-directed operations, including scenario-based training, readiness exercises, emergency response, and tactical and life-safety equipment accountability.
