Category CEO, Diagnostics

Aonic•San Francisco, CA
•Onsite

About The Position

Aonic is hiring a Category CEO to build its Diagnostics business from zero, offering blood tests and imaging—including MRI and CT scans—at cost. The role owns the category as a founder would own a business: selecting services, building partner relationships, setting transparent prices equal to partner costs, and designing how members book services and receive and understand results. The category’s north star is revenue at constant cost, with medical quality, member experience, and compliance as safeguards. The role will launch blood testing first, including an annual panel and add-ons ordered by a physician and collected through national lab networks. It will then expand into imaging, initially in the Bay Area and later in additional metros, with services such as coronary calcium scores, MRI, CT, and elective whole-body MRI with clear disclosure. The Category CEO will determine future offerings, which may include ultrasound, mammography, and body composition services. The role partners closely with Aonic’s CEO, medical director, regulatory counsel, and founding engineer. Clinical decisions remain with physicians; the Category CEO builds the business and operational systems around them. This includes negotiating with labs, imaging centers, and physician networks; establishing service standards and data integrations; working on medical quality and compliance; and building AI-native booking, ordering, results, and follow-up operations. The role will hire a partner and operations lead and develop a health care playbook with the Category CEO for Online Care & Prescriptions. The position is fully onsite in San Francisco’s Jackson Square. The stated schedule is Monday through Thursday, 8 a.m. to 7 p.m., and Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Compensation is a competitive base salary plus significant equity.

Requirements

  • At least 4 years of operating experience in operations, strategy and operations, business operations, or general management at a high-growth health care or technology startup; alternatively, experience at McKinsey, Boston Consulting Group, or Bain followed by hands-on operating work.
  • Health care delivery experience building or running work with clinicians, labs, imaging centers, or provider networks, and knowledge of how medical services are ordered, delivered, priced, and regulated.
  • Demonstrated end-to-end ownership of a service line, market, partner network, or operations function, with measurable impact on revenue, cost, or speed.
  • Practical experience building AI agents or automations that run real operations, with measurable outcomes rather than prototypes alone.
  • Commercial negotiation experience with providers, partners, or customers, and willingness to negotiate directly with hospital groups or labs.
  • Degree from a top university in engineering, computer science, science, economics, or business, with top grades.
  • High ambition and desire for responsibility and steep growth.
  • Strong work ethic and intensity, and comfort working fully onsite in San Francisco on the stated schedule of 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday.

Nice To Haves

  • Ability to explain a scan or blood test on camera; launches run through creators.
  • Experience at an imaging, lab testing, or preventive health company.
  • A mix of analytical, practical commercial, and interpersonal judgment; ability to build trust with physicians, partners, teammates, and worried members.
  • A high-agency approach, calm and clear communication, and personal commitment to patient safety, quality, and compliance.

Responsibilities

  • Build the Diagnostics business from zero, owning its service range, partner network, costs, member booking experience, and delivery and interpretation of results.
  • Launch physician-ordered blood testing through national lab networks, including an annual panel and add-ons, with results explained in the Aonic app.
  • Expand into imaging services, including coronary calcium scores, MRI, CT, and elective whole-body MRI, initially in the Bay Area and then in additional metros.
  • Determine which diagnostic services to add next and when, potentially including ultrasound, mammography, and body composition.
  • Own relationships with national labs, lab-ordering platforms, imaging center groups, independent centers, and physician networks that order and interpret services.
  • Negotiate cash rates, volume pricing, scanner capacity including evening and weekend slots, turnaround times, and data integration; periodically re-bid partners.
  • Set one transparent price per scan and test, equal to the amount paid to partners, with no markup.
  • Work with the medical director and regulatory counsel on physician orders, follow-up of abnormal results, state rules for consumer lab testing, patient privacy, and marketing claims.
  • Hold partners to accreditation, board-certified radiologists, and clear turnaround-time standards, ensuring findings requiring follow-up are not lost.
  • Build AI-agent-supported booking, ordering, results, and follow-up operations with the founding engineer; design agent rules and measure reliability and outcomes.
  • Hire a partner and operations lead for diagnostics, expanding the team as volume grows.
  • Develop a health care playbook with the Category CEO for Online Care & Prescriptions.
  • Own category revenue at constant cost while safeguarding medical quality, member experience, and compliance.
