About The Position

The Cape Breton-Victoria Regional Centre for Education (CBVRCE) is seeking Casual Cafeteria Workers to support its public school system. The CBVRCE serves approximately 12,000 students across 38 schools and is committed to fostering a diverse, inclusive, and supportive educational environment. These positions are crucial for the school lunch program and other food initiatives, ensuring students have access to healthy and equitable food options. The role involves food preparation, service, and maintaining kitchen hygiene, all while interacting positively with students and adhering to school policies.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma, GED, or suitable equivalent.
  • A minimum of one (1) year experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified, including quantity cooking, preferably in a school cafeteria setting.
  • Completion of a recognized Food Safety training program.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in a dynamic, fast-paced environment.
  • Commitment to food equity and healthy eating.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to be interpersonally responsive to the diverse backgrounds and personalities of students of various ages, and to maintain confidentiality in all issues related to students, families and school.
  • Physically able to perform duties of the position including heavy lifting (may require lifting of up to 50 lbs), walking and standing during most of the day, and working in an environment with heat fluctuations.

Nice To Haves

  • Completion of a culinary course or food service management course would be an asset.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare and serve food for the school lunch program and other school food programs as required.
  • Follow food safety standards and school allergy plans.
  • Service customers in a friendly and efficient manner.
  • Perform kitchen responsibilities including washing dishes, collecting and removing compost, recyclables, and garbage.
  • Clean and organize work areas, equipment, utensils, service stations, and floors.
  • Restock supplies for the kitchen and cafeteria.
  • Other related duties as assigned.
