About The Position

The Cashier provides friendly, cooperative service to internal and external customers at WinCo Foods retail locations. The role processes customer orders efficiently, accurately, safely, and courteously at a two-aisle check stand, a multi-station self-checkout lane, or the customer service desk, as assigned. Stores operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week, with limited exceptions. Shifts are generally 6–8 hours and occur between 5:00 a.m. and 1:00 a.m. The position may also involve self-checkout attendant duties, including assisting customers, monitoring transactions and alerts, maintaining awareness of the self-checkout area, and helping promote accuracy and safety. Cashiers may stock, price, and rotate merchandise and are expected to follow company policies and applicable laws, including requirements related to restricted sales and food-stamp or WIC vouchers.

Requirements

Ability to work varied shifts in a 24/7 operation, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
Ability to interact with customers and coworkers in a friendly, courteous, and tactful manner while maintaining composure.
Ability to communicate through hearing and speech to perform customer-relations tasks.
Ability to complete written forms and visually inspect and read merchandise information.
Ability to frequently lift and maneuver objects of varying dimensions and weights up to 20 pounds and occasionally lift up to 50 pounds.
Ability to perform repetitive work accurately and operate check stand equipment, including cash registers, scanners, and scales.
Ability to stand or sit for long periods, walk rapidly, and frequently bend, stoop, twist, and turn for long periods.
Must be at least 16 years old.
Manual dexterity and good hand-eye coordination.
Ability to learn and memorize information such as PLU codes, product locations, check stand and keyboard procedures, and company policies.
Accuracy in scanning and verifying sales and handling monetary transactions, with mental alertness and basic math skills.
Ability to occasionally use blades for box cutting and household cleaners to maintain the work area.
Ability to perform primary duties efficiently and accurately.
Ability to navigate potentially high-stress situations, including volatile or dissatisfied customers and high volumes of transactions and customers.
Food safety or handler cards and tobacco or alcohol sales certification may be required by applicable state and local laws.

Responsibilities

Welcome, engage, serve, and thank customers while maintaining a friendly, enthusiastic customer-service environment.
Operate check stand equipment, including cash registers, scanners, and scales, to process customer orders.
Use suggestive selling and other sales techniques.
Process cash, checks, gift certificates, travelers checks, food stamps, coupons, and refunds in accordance with cash-handling and lane-accountability policies.
Maintain knowledge of product locations, monitor UPC codes, and ensure correct pricing.
Keep the check stand clean, neat, stocked, and safe and secure.
Stock, price, and rotate merchandise.
Work at a multi-station self-checkout lane or customer service counter when assigned.
Follow state and federal laws governing sales of restricted or regulated items, such as tobacco and alcohol.
Follow USDA food-stamp and WIC voucher procedures.
At self-checkout, move through the area to expedite transactions, maintain an attentive presence, and keep the area clear of safety hazards.
Initiate contact with customers and assist them as they use self-checkout.
Review, address, and clear self-checkout alerts and transaction errors accurately.
Monitor multiple simultaneous transactions and verify payment in a fast-paced setting.
Observe self-checkout activity, anticipate customer needs, and help ensure transaction accuracy and limit shrinkage.
Address or report safety concerns according to company policy.
Perform other duties as assigned or needed.
