About The Position

The City of Seattle is seeking to hire two journey-level skilled carpenters to perform carpentry work in the construction, maintenance, alteration, and repair of buildings, building equipment, and facilities. In this role you’ll have the opportunity to perform a broad scope of facility maintenance work, including maintenance. repair, alteration and construction. These positions require work under the general direction of the Carpenter Crew Chief and within a team of 30+ members of skilled trades and administrative professionals. ABOUT US FAS is often the public's first interaction with the City of Seattle, operating as a customer-focused front door that assists with everything from paying utilities or reporting a pothole to requesting public information or even adopting a new pet. The 500-plus employees of FAS span across 10 divisions and work behind-the-scenes providing critical functions, like managing 120 City facilities—including police and fire stations—overseeing the City's neighborhood customer service centers and Customer Service Bureau and making sure minority-owned businesses can equitably compete for City contracts. Requirements

  • Three years of carpentry trade experience under the direction of a journey level carpenter
  • Completion of an accepted carpentry apprenticeship program.
  • Valid Washington State driver's license or ability to obtain one by the start date.
  • Candidates may be most successful in this role if they have a broad scope of journey-level maintenance carpentry and related trades knowledge and experience including locksmith experience, are able to diagnose issues and solve problems and have strong mechanical skills.
  • This skill level is typically gained through completion of apprenticeship program and at least three years of journey level experience.
  • Must be able to read and interpret blueprints.
  • Successfully passing a Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) background check.
  • Complete fingerprinting and all required CJIS screening before hire.
  • Pass a pre-employment physical
  • Submit a current, “FULL” driving abstract from the Department of Licensing upon offer of employment.

Nice To Haves

  • Ten (10) years of recent experience as a journey level Carpenter in maintenance or commercial construction.
  • Finish carpentry and cabinet making skills.
  • Ability to use a smartphone for communication, email, texting, photos, Microsoft Teams, google maps, and for research.
  • Comfortable using a computer for email and for looking things up.

Responsibilities

  • Install and maintain doors, electronic and manual locks and other security hardware.
  • Alter, repair, and construct a variety of building structures such as walls, partitions, doorways, window casings, stairways, and roofs.
  • Build, install and repair, cabinets, furniture and other fixtures such as soap-towel-toilet paper dispensers, shelving, bulletin boards, whiteboards.
  • Design, construct, remodel, repair and install cabinets.
  • Install flooring, ceiling and wall covering materials.
  • Estimate and requisition materials for work activities; maintain records of job time and materials used.
  • Operate power equipment such as saws, jointers, lathes, sanders, planers, boring and mortising machines; clean, sharpen, maintain and repair such equipment.
  • Read, interpret, and work from blueprints, plans, specifications, and written instructions to complete work orders timely and within City building codes.
  • Build and install concrete forms; pour and finish concrete.
  • Assist in the design and development of plans for new construction depending on the work assignments.
  • Read, track and input work orders in the City's work order management system.
  • Employees may also occasionally perform tasks associated with related trades.
