About The Position

This position is responsible for completing all construction for sets, scenic props, etc. for any production coming out of the scene shop. The Carpenter will work independently, exercising good judgment and discretion, while keeping the workspace organized, maintaining tools and equipment, and meeting safety requirements. This position is supervised by the Technical Director.

Requirements

  • 1-3 years of experience in theatrical or general carpentry.
  • Strong experience in carpentry, understanding different construction methods.
  • Expertise of standard, power, and stationary tools, and safe operation of those tools.
  • Working knowledge of all areas of a production/fabrication shop.
  • Able to read and understand construction drafting.
  • Ability to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing to convey clear, well-articulated information.
  • Ability to understand, speak, and write English to convey messages and correspond in an articulate and professional manner.
  • Possess public communication skills that allow professional representation of Liberty University.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Computer skills.
  • Intuitively able to reason, analyze information and events, and apply judgment to solve problems of both a routine and complex nature.
  • Regularly required to hear and speak to effectively communicate orally.
  • Regularly required to stand, walk, and climb stairs to move about the campus.
  • Handle materials, reach overhead, kneel or stoop to conduct business.
  • Regularly lift 40 or fewer pounds.
  • Ability to work nights and weekends.
  • Proof of a valid driver’s license, an acceptable DMV record, LU Driving Approval, and liability insurance is required when driving in the performance of the employee’s position.

  • May be required to sit to perform deskwork or type on a keyboard.

Responsibilities

  • Perform standard construction tasks as assigned.
  • Perform in the safe use of standard, power, and stationary tools.
  • Participate in the build, load-in, and strike phases of each theatre production.
  • Fabrication work in multiple mediums including wood, metal, and plastic.
  • Construction with cabinetry level finishing.
  • Remains abreast of existing and emerging technologies, processes, products, services and leading industry performance benchmarks.
  • Strictly adheres to Liberty University policies, representing the University in an exemplary manner.
  • Works effectively as a team member, embracing and fostering LU’s Christian model and Mission – Training Champions for Christ.
  • Assists in oversight for student workers, production students, and CSER students.
