About The Position

Under general supervision, perform skilled maintenance carpentry work in City-owned facilities. The purpose of the Carpenter position is to perform construction, inspections, repairs and maintenance to APR Facilities. Duties may include but are not limited to: Performing skilled carpentry work to construct or repair walls, fabricate cabinets, repair or replace doors, windows, siding, and trim. Operating drills, circular saws, miter saws, radial arm saws, table saws, sanders,routers, pneumatic nail guns, grinders, etc. Using industry tools to measure and layout using measuring tape, level, squares,string line, laser level, and transit. Inspect buildings, structures, and record data on appropriate I-Pads, Desktop computers, forms, logbooks, etc.

Requirements

  • Graduation from an accredited high school or equivalent, plus two years of experience as a journeyman carpenter
  • Experience may substitute for education up to four (4) years.
  • Texas Class C Operator’s License or ability to obtain one within 90 calendar days of hire.
  • Must possess required knowledge, skills, abilities, and experience and be able to explain and demonstrate, with or without reasonable accommodations, that the essential functions of the job can be performed.
  • Knowledge of materials, equipment, and procedures.
  • Knowledge of applicable building codes.
  • Knowledge of proper safety practices, procedure and regulations.
  • Skill in reading and understanding blueprints.
  • Skill in estimating time, costs, and materials.
  • Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with City employees and the public.
  • Ability to safely operate City vehicles and equipment.
  • Tasks involve bending, lifting, walking, carrying or using a force equal to lifting up to thirty-five (35) pounds.
  • Work environment includes inside, and outside environmental conditions, extreme temperatures, and hazards associated with equipment operation including fumes, oils, gases and mists.
  • Must be physically and mentally able to communicate, respond and work with participant’s needs and safety issues.
  • External New Hires must meet the City of Austin’s Driver Record Evaluation (DRE) requisite.
  • To be considered for a driving position, applicants cannot have more than three moving violations or a total of six Driver Record Evaluation points within a period of thirty-six (36) months.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in building maintenance and/or construction of commercial buildings.
  • Experience in wood and metal stud structural framing.
  • Experience shooting and computing grades.
  • Experience forming and finishing concrete.
  • Experience operating, inspecting, and maintaining light to heavy equipment.
  • Experience assisting in installing irrigation systems.

Responsibilities
