A Carpenter I installs and repairs structural woodwork such as doors, windows and floors, and basic wooden furnishings following the directions of a skilled carpenter. Work of this class involves no supervisory duties or responsibilities. Incumbents receive close supervision from a technical superior. Employees in this class work a conventional workweek. Work is performed in a carpentry shop or at other locations in City buildings where the employee is exposed to such conditions as extremes of temperature, dust, noise, vibrations and hazardous machinery. Work requires moderate physical exertion.

Requirements

  • Have a high school diploma or GED certification from an accredited institution.
  • Have one year of experience in carpentry work.
  • Have a valid Maryland Class C Noncommercial driver's license or an equivalent driver's license and eligible to obtain a Baltimore City driver’s permit.
  • Knowledge of carpentry terminology, techniques and procedures.
  • Knowledge of materials used in carpentry.
  • Knowledge of safety practices and fire prevention regulations pertaining to the performance of carpentry work.
  • Ability to make accurate measurements.
  • Ability to work from blueprints, plans or sketches.
  • Ability to use common woodworking tools, equipment and machinery such as wood chisels, planes, wood bits, hand and power saws.
  • Ability to perform routine maintenance and minor repairs on carpentry tools, equipment and machinery.
  • Employees are required to provide hand tools for this work.

Responsibilities
