About The Position

Altom Transport is hiring an experienced 2nd Shift HM183 Cargo Tank Mechanic at our Pasadena, TX shop. This role offers a career opportunity for HM183-qualified mechanics, moving beyond just a paycheck. The mechanic will work indoors in a climate-controlled bay, utilizing well-maintained equipment, and having access to the necessary tools and parts to perform the job effectively. Requirements

  • Active HM183 Registered Inspector status with PHMSA or current eligibility to register.
  • Minimum 2 years of diesel tractor experience.
  • Minimum 1 year of trailer/tanker experience.
  • Working knowledge of 49 CFR Parts 178, 180, and 393.
  • Ability to read and interpret DOT regulations, OEM service manuals, and electrical/hydraulic schematics.
  • Comfortable working around liquid bulk product residue, including hazmat.
  • Own basic hand tools.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Must pass pre-employment drug screen, physical, and background check.
  • Authorized to work in the United States.
  • Able to lift up to 50 lbs, climb ladders, and work in confined spaces.

Nice To Haves

  • Current V, I, P, L, T, and U cargo tank inspection qualifications.
  • Hands-on experience with DOT 406, 407, 412 and MC 306, 307, 312 cargo tanks.
  • Class A or B CDL.
  • ASE certifications (T-series in particular).
  • Hazmat endorsement.
  • Welding certification (MIG/TIG on stainless or aluminum).
  • Prior experience at a tanker carrier, petrochemical, or food-grade hauler.

Responsibilities

  • Perform HM183 inspections on cargo tanks.
  • Conduct diesel tractor maintenance and repair.
  • Perform trailer/tanker maintenance and repair.
  • Interpret and apply DOT regulations (49 CFR Parts 178, 180, and 393).
  • Read and interpret OEM service manuals and electrical/hydraulic schematics.
  • Work around liquid bulk product residue, including hazmat.
  • Operate basic hand tools and utilize provided specialty tools, lifts, and diagnostic equipment.
  • Lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Climb ladders.
  • Work in confined spaces.
