About The Position

The Caretaker is responsible for performing minor maintenance/repairs, seasonal duties as well as Custodial work for New Hope Community Church and Thrift Store. Requirements

  • Completion of Secondary School.
  • Class “G” driver’s license.
  • A minimum of one (1) year of prior related experience, including general familiarity with cleaning and maintenance procedures and equipment.
  • Valid Ontario Class “G” Driver’s licence and a copy of a current driver’s abstract for review and verification that is satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion, is required.
  • Be able to perform minor maintenance on equipment such as oil changes, blade sharpening and winterizing.
  • Capable of operating outdoor equipment (e.g. snowblower, lawnmower, etc).
  • Maintain information in confidence as required.
  • Participate as an active and responsible team member.
  • Represent the organization in a professional and engaging manner.
  • Good organizational/time management skills, ability to follow detailed instructions.
  • Self-motivated and disciplined.
  • Demonstrated ability to use sound judgment when making decisions.
  • Ability to work in a cooperative team-oriented atmosphere.
  • Ability to undergo applicable screening and background checks successfully that are satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion (i.e., The Salvation Army Abuse Registry) and provide an original copy of a Background Check with vulnerable sector screening.
  • Ability and willingness to develop an understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities.

Responsibilities

  • Undertake general outside labour spring/summer groundskeeping, including (but not limited to) weed cutting, weeding flower beds, cutting grass, tree/shrub trimming, planting flowers/shrubs, watering plants and maintaining ground appearance (adding mulch to planting areas) at both locations.
  • Undertake general outside labour fall/winter groundskeeping including (but not limited to) snow removal- sidewalks, clearing emergency exits, and applying salt/sand at both locations and recording usage.
  • Set up and take down tables/chairs for weekly programs and special events (funerals, weddings, special church events).
  • Perform monthly health and safety checks at both locations.
  • Identify/report to supervisor any hazardous conditions.
  • Recycling/compost – collect, bring to curb and return from curb at both locations.
  • At Thrift store ensure kitchen cleanliness, clean and polish sinks, toilets and counter tops, mirrors, and fixtures; clean washrooms (toilets, sinks, floors), restock washrooms and hand sanitizers, and distribute received material as required, clean washroom at Thrift Store (1-2 times per week).
  • Ensure the general upkeep of external property, keep sidewalks and entrances clear of litter/garbage.
  • Clean windows and doors regularly (inside and out) at both locations.
  • Keep water coolers replenished at both locations.
  • Assist all exits are clear of debris and all appropriate passageways are accessible in case of fire.
  • Maintain First Aid Kits’ inventory, in consultation with Pastors/TS Manager, at both locations.
  • Refill and update MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheets) in all binders – chemical safe storage (both locations).
  • Report all maintenance issues/repairs to Pastors and/or TS Manager and arrange for external trades/technician personnel as required
  • Open and close for special events /rentals at the Corps.
  • Sweep and mop Thrift Store floors (1-2 times per week) before or after TS operational hours.
  • Keep storage areas organized and clean.
  • Be available and present for regularly scheduled external technicians or inspectors (Food safety, pest control, fire inspector, etc.) to give access to necessary rooms at both locations.
  • Make minor repairs (oil changes for snowblowers, lawnmower, sharpening blades, unblocking toilets, wall parch-painting etc.), working in consultation with the Pastors/TS Manager regarding larger maintenance issues/repairs at both locations.
  • Receive delivery of major goods as required.
  • Schedule maintenance/servicing for program vehicles.
  • Coordinate Annual Spring Cleanup.
  • Work in compliance with and abide by The Salvation Army’s health and safety policies and procedures.
  • Work in compliance with the Ontario Health & Safety Act and Regulations, use personal prescribed safety equipment and clothing as directed by the employer, report workplace hazards, dangers, injuries or illness, work in a manner as required by the employer, and report workplace injuries or illness.
  • Monitor and report any concern regarding adherence to the acceptable health standards and that physical property is maintained, arranging for repairs as necessary.
  • Perform other related duties.
