About The Position

The goal of the Career Development Intern (CDI) program is to provide at-risk youth, foster youth, individuals with disabilities, and homeless individuals with opportunities within the County of Los Angeles and to assist them in gaining the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to compete for full-time permanent positions. In a training capacity and under supervision, participates in entry-level work in one of a variety of job assignments. Available Career Pathways and Examples of Duties Include: Office Support/Clerical Intern: Assists the public by providing directions, instructions, and responses to routine inquiries in person or by telephone. Processes work through data entry on a computer. Information Technology/Technical Support Intern: Assists in the installation, maintenance, upgrade, and removal of information technology equipment such as personal computers, printers, and related devices Assists in the development of routine computer system usage schedules and uses computer-assisted communication equipment. Crafts Support Intern: Assists a journey-level or other skilled craft worker in a variety of maintenance, repair, or construction work by furnishing and using simple tools, materials, and supplies. Cleans work-area machines and operates simple machines and equipment. Heavy Maintenance & Operational Support Intern: Assists in the repair and maintenance of roads, flood control channels, sewers, easements, sidewalks, and other publicly maintained properties. Assists skilled warehouse workers in warehouses and at loading docks and in the loading and delivery of heavy and/or bulky supplies and materials.

Requirements

  • Be a participant in one of the following programs: Foster Youth Program – Current enrollment in, completion of, or current or past eligibility for the Department of Children and Family Services' Independent Living Program and/or Probation Department's Independent Living Program (ILP).
  • County Youth Bridges Opportunity Program – Identification as an At-Risk Youth by a County of Los Angeles authorized department, other local, State, or Federal agencies or schools; or by a bona fide non-profit organization whose mission includes fostering or enhancing employment opportunities for at-risk youth.
  • Homeless Hiring Program – Individuals who are currently homeless, formerly homeless, or at risk of homelessness, as verified by a recognized participating community-based organization whose mission includes fostering or enhancing opportunities for individuals experiencing homelessness, and can provide proof of completion of their job readiness program.
  • Disability Hiring Program – Must possess an Individual Facing Barriers to Employment Program certificate or a Schedule A letter from the State Department of Rehabilitation (DOR).
  • An individual must meet the following DOR criteria: Has a physical or mental impairment or medical condition that limits one or more major life activities; Has a record or history of such impairment or disability; or Is regarded as having such an impairment or disability.
  • Some assignments may require applicants to meet specific age limitations at the time of appointment.
  • To demonstrate that you meet any of the specialty program requirements, you must attach proof of program participation with your application.
  • Applicants who have previously been appointed as a Career Development Intern in any of the following specialties—Heavy Maintenance and Operational Support, Office and Clerical Support, Crafts Support, or IT/Technical Support—for more than 18 cumulative months within that specialty will not be eligible for appointment to that specialty.
  • Some assignments may require a valid California Class C Driver License to perform job-related essential duties, or the ability to utilize an alternative method of transportation when needed to carry out job-related essential functions.
  • Depending on the specialized area you are selected for, there may be a general physical examination that you will need to undergo.

  • If you are a person with a disability, you may qualify for a Schedule A Letter through the Department of Rehabilitation (DOR). To obtain either document, visit your local DOR office and request the Counselor of the Day. Please bring proof of your disability, such as medical records or a doctor’s letter. The counselor will review your documentation and provide your Schedule A Letter.
