About The Position

The Cardiovascular & Mechanical Circulatory Support (MCS) Clinical Support Coordinator provides evaluation, treatment, and follow-up to patients within the cardiovascular and MCS program. Serves as a clinical expert and operational resource within the cardiovascular service line for all things related to the care and education of patients and ensures efficient and effective processes that support safe patient care throughout the continuum of care. Participate in the development and implementation of the cardiovascular/MCS program. Coordinates and supervises nursing standards of practice for patients and participates in data reporting. May also be responsible for performing specific procedures and/or orient other staff to the department. This role integrates patient and family education, perioperative care coordination, staff development, clinical procedures and quality and process improvement committees, to advance the standard of care for open heart surgery and MCS patients across the continuum.

Requirements

  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing.
  • RN-Registered Nurse for the state where care is provided.
  • 2 years recent relevant experience.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and competence with regard to nursing theories, concepts and practices; medical terminology; anatomy; and physiology.
  • Working knowledge of the healthcare industry, safety precaution policies, best practices regarding patient care and privacy, and changes in local/state/federal regulations.
  • Possess written and verbal communications skills to explain sensitive information clearly and professionally to diverse audiences, including non-medical people.
  • Basic knowledge of computer applications, such as Microsoft Office Suite (Word and Outlook), Electronic Health Record (EPIC preferred).
  • Prioritize assignments and work within standardized policies, procedures, and scientific methods to achieve objectives and meet deadlines.
  • Work independently, as well as be part of the team, including accomplishing multiple tasks in an environment with interruptions.
  • Identify, evaluate and resolve standard problems by selecting appropriate solutions from established options.
  • Ensure the privacy of each patient’s protected health information (PHI).
  • Build collaborate relationships with peers and other healthcare providers to achieve departmental and corporate objectives.

  • Advanced knowledge of mechanical circulatory support devices in ECMO, VADS, Impella, and other temporary MCS devices.
  • Ability to operate, monitor, and troubleshoot extracorporeal circuits.
  • Advanced understanding of hemodynamics, oxygen delivery, and cardiac physiology as well as anticoagulation management, and mechanical support complications and emergency management.
  • Ability to serve as a clinical liaison between multidisciplinary teams.
  • Design and deliver formal and informal education programs for interdisciplinary teams including nurses.
  • Experience in competency validation and annual skills assessment.
  • Working knowledge of existing care guidelines and ability to translate guidelines into practical bedside education.
  • Experience participating or leading, performance improvement initiatives for MCS/ECMO Programs to drive continuous improvement in clinical and operational performance.
  • Demonstrate working knowledge of applicable registries and databases e.g ELSO, STS.
