The Cardiac Technician conducts a wide range of non-invasive cardiac tests under direct supervision for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes. The role performs cardiac tests and monitors patients’ heart functions using cardiology equipment. Depending on department needs, the technician places electrodes for electrocardiograms (EKGs) or telemetry (Holter) monitoring and operates the equipment. The technician checks, calibrates, and maintains cardiology equipment to support proper operation and accurate test results; provides care and counseling to help cardiac patients remain comfortable and safe; and alerts nurses or physicians to critical values, abnormalities, or changes in patient responses. The position also obtains and records patient information and medical histories, interprets EKG results, and prepares factual written reports. In some departments, technicians monitor multiple patients simultaneously, critically interpret rhythms, and communicate concerns effectively to staff. After a dose is administered to a patient, the technician safely disposes of controlled substances with an RN. This is a 40-hour-per-week, day-shift role with Monday-through-Friday scheduling and 8-hour shifts. The listed hours are 7:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Compensation is listed at $18.00–$28.00.
