The Cardiac Sonographer III independently performs all echocardiograms, including highly complex studies in hospital-based and/or pediatric settings. Cases may include complex valve and congenital studies, Cath/EP lab procedures, biopsies, TAVRs, and pediatric echocardiograms. In pediatric settings, the sonographer performs comprehensive studies for patients with congenital or structurally abnormal hearts, including pediatric, postoperative, adult congenital, and fetal populations. The role requires advanced knowledge of congenital anatomy, surgical repairs, and age-dependent physiology and supports high-acuity diagnostic and clinical decision-making. The sonographer prepares preliminary reports with accurate measurements and appropriate statements, understands the clinical reasons for examinations, and follows patient privacy and safety guidelines and departmental and hospital policies. The role also involves precepting and mentoring junior staff, students, and fellows; leading the team when lead sonographers are absent; supporting accreditation and quality-assurance activities; and assisting with research and professional activities. Responsibilities may change at department leadership’s discretion. For New Hampshire sites, a state OPLC Medical Imaging License is required upon hire.
