About The Position

Cardiac Nurse Practitioners will support the Cardiology Division, which is part of Medical Service at VA Greater Los Angeles Healthcare System (VAGLAHS). This includes the West Los Angeles VA Medical Center, Sepulveda VA Ambulatory Care Center, and/or Ventura CBOC. The Cardiology Division has an urgent need for Cardiac Nurse Practitioners to provide diagnosis, treatment, consultation, and follow-up patient care services to the Arrhythmia Service and Heart Failure Program.

Requirements

  • A current license in at least one (1) state, territory, or commonwealth in the U.S. or the District of Columbia.
  • Current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) by an American Heart Association approved vendor.
  • A current curriculum vitae (CV) which identifies the provider’s education and professional qualifications commensurate with the position or specialty for which they are being offered to perform.
  • A minimum of one (1) year direct patient care experience within the last three (3) years.
  • Prior one (1) year direct outpatient patient care experience as a nurse practitioner in Cardiology.
  • Be current on tuberculosis testing, rubella testing, and all immunizations prior to performing services.
  • Have no health or physical disability restrictions that interfere with the performance of duties per this SOW.
  • Have the knowledge and ability to use computers and technology efficiently in the course of the duties and responsibilities outlined herein.
  • Certification requirements: Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner (ACNPC-AG) or Acute Care Nurse Practitioner (ACNP).
  • Advanced clinical assessment, critical thinking, and independent decision-making skills.
  • Strong knowledge of cardiology, including arrhythmia management, heart failure management, and cardiac disease prevention and treatment.
  • Ability to independently evaluate, diagnose, treat, and manage patients with acute, chronic, and long-term cardiac conditions.
  • Demonstrated competency in pacemaker, Implantable Cardioverter-Defibrillator (ICD), and Cardiac Implantable Electronic Device (CIED) evaluation and management.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and collaboratively within an interdisciplinary medical team.
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills with the ability to prioritize patient care and provide services in a timely manner.
  • Excellent clinical documentation skills with a commitment to maintaining accurate, concise, legible, and confidential medical records.
  • Strong computer and technology skills, including the ability to efficiently document and manage patient information within electronic health record systems such as CPRS.
  • Demonstrated commitment to evidence-based practice, clinical guidelines, patient safety, disease prevention, and health promotion.
  • Strong patient and family education skills, including the ability to effectively communicate preventive care, medical conditions, treatment plans, and medication instructions.
  • Excellent interpersonal and professional communication skills with the ability to treat patients, families, and staff with respect and dignity.
  • Ability to effectively communicate and present patient cases in a clear, concise, and organized manner.
  • Demonstrated commitment to professional development, maintaining clinical competencies, and evaluating and improving one's own practice in accordance with Advanced Practice Nurse standards.
  • Ability to incorporate clinical research and evidence into patient-care decisions and recommendations.
  • Strong attention to detail, including appropriate ICD and CPT coding, diagnostic test interpretation, medication management, and clinical documentation.

Responsibilities

  • Executes position responsibilities independently and collaboratively in accordance with the scope and Standards of Advanced Nursing Practice within the specialty area.
  • Pacemaker, Implanted Cardioverter-Defibrillator, and Cardiac Implanted Electronic Device evaluation and management.
  • Management of patients with heart failure.
  • Monitoring Exercise Tolerance Tests.
  • Care decisions and management of new and follow up patients presenting with cardiac diagnosis.
  • Works in an independent and interdependent relationship with members of the medical staff.
  • Effectively identifies, evaluates, and addresses disease prevention and health promotion issues while administering quality patient care.
  • Demonstrates advanced assessment and decision-making skills.
  • Maintains legible, accurate, and confidential medical records.
  • Documents all medical evaluations, diagnoses, treatment, outcomes, education, referrals, and consultations.
  • Documents care/visit in Computerized Patient Record System (CPRS) appropriately, accurately and concisely.
  • Utilizes Point of Enrollment (POE).
  • Follows clinical guidelines and standards of practice for health promotion, maintenance and illness prevention.
  • Completes health histories and other clinical documentation consistently and with pertinent information.
  • Responsible for the diagnosis and treatment of acute, chronic, and long-term healthcare issues.
  • Care and treatment plans are consistent with assessments.
  • Orders and interprets diagnostic tests appropriately.
  • Selects/furnishes (prescribes) or recommends pharmacological agents and durable medical equipment appropriately.
  • Sets priorities to provide care in an organized and timely manner.
  • Presents cases in a concise, organized manner.
  • Participates in formal and informal performance evaluations and professional development.
  • Evaluates own performance according to the Advance Practice Nurse (APN) Scope of Practice standards of professional and regulatory bodies and takes actions to improve practice.
  • Maintains mandatory requirements and competency standards.
  • Treats staff, patients and family with respect and dignity.
  • Uses clinical research techniques in decision-making and in making recommendations.
  • Identifies and documents appropriate International Classification of Diseases (ICD) and Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) coding for patient encounters.
  • Educates patients and/or families about preventive care, medical issues, and use of prescribed medical treatments and/or medications.
  • Complies with performance measures identified by VA Central Office.
  • Complies with safety facility patient guidelines and other mandatory requirements as directed.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.
