About The Position

Captive Associate Underwriter Location: Chicago, IL / Hybrid About HDI Global Insurance Company HDI Global Insurance Company is a commercial property and casualty insurer headquartered in Chicago, IL. As a wholly owned subsidiary of HDI Global SE, we manage the industrial lines division of the Talanx Group. Our extensive portfolio of products and services, combined with an international network of local insurers in over 150 countries, enables us to offer comprehensive domestic and global insurance solutions for U.S.-based multinational companies. We are currently seeking a Captive Associate Underwriter to join our team. This role supports underwriting activities, broker engagement, and portfolio management within the captive insurance space. The position requires strong analytical skills, relationship‑building capabilities, and the ability to support underwriting decisions while developing technical expertise.

Requirements

  • 1+ years of experience in E&S, wholesale, standard lines underwriting, broking, or risk management.
  • General understanding of captive insurance structures and underwriting principles.
  • Knowledge of general liability, property, auto, workers’ compensation, umbrella, and excess coverages.
  • Familiarity with underwriting tools and resources such as ISO and IRMI.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and presentation skills.
  • Ability to build and maintain broker relationships locally or regionally.
  • Strong organizational and analytical skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, including Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Strong negotiation, collaboration, and marketing capabilities.
  • Applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Risk Management, Accounting, Mathematics, Business, or a related field preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Participate in prospecting efforts by identifying new business opportunities and collaborating with brokers and agents to generate submissions.
  • Review and evaluate new and renewal business in alignment with underwriting guidelines, market conditions, and geographic focus; contribute to marketing strategies.
  • Assess coverage requests from brokers and determine appropriate underwriting positions within assigned authority, escalating when necessary.
  • Underwrite individual risks through analysis of exposures, including development of pricing, limits, retentions, and endorsements within the referral framework.
  • Manage a personal book of business and support profitability and growth objectives.
  • Meet service standards, including quote turnaround times, policy issuance, file documentation, and system data integrity.
  • Conduct broker marketing calls to solicit new business, develop relationships, and gather market intelligence.
  • Maintain and strengthen relationships with brokers and wholesalers to support business objectives.
  • Monitor insurance market trends and product developments to inform underwriting decisions.
  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders, including branch marketing and profit center teams, to support cross‑selling initiatives.
  • Participate in ongoing training and development activities to enhance underwriting knowledge and technical skills.
