About The Position

The Capital Project Engineer role is divided into two levels: Civil Engineer III and Civil Engineer IV. The Civil Engineer III level requires independent evaluation, selection, and application of civil engineering techniques, procedures, and criteria, with the ability to adapt existing plans or specifications. This level demands a competent professional engineer in civil and traffic engineering, potentially coordinating the work of support staff. The Civil Engineer IV level requires progressive experience and extensive knowledge of civil engineering principles and practices. This role involves independent decision-making on engineering problems, representing the City in public meetings, and coordinating consultants, contractors, and staff. Candidates will be considered for either the Civil Engineer III or Civil Engineer IV level based on their experience and qualifications.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering from an accredited four-year college or university.
  • Civil Engineer III: A minimum of five years of full-time civil engineering experience, if a Professional Licensed Engineer (PE) in the State of Michigan.
  • Civil Engineer III: A minimum of eight years of full-time civil engineering experience, if has passed the Fundamental-in-Engineering (FE) exam.
  • Civil Engineer IV: Professional Engineering License in the State of Michigan or the ability to obtain one in less than six months from the date of hire.
  • Civil Engineer IV: Minimum of eight years of progressive civil engineering and engineering practice.
  • Valid Driver’s License.
  • Civil Engineer III: Fundamental-in-Engineering (FE), or Professional Engineering License (PE).
  • Civil Engineer IV: Professional Engineering License (PE).

Responsibilities

  • Independent evaluation, selection, and application of standard civil engineering techniques, procedures, and criteria.
  • Adaptation and modification of existing plans or specifications.
  • Coordination of the work of engineers, draftspersons, technicians, and others who assist in specific assignments (Civil Engineer III).
  • Application of intensive and diversified knowledge of civil engineering principles and practices (Civil Engineer IV).
  • Independent decision-making on engineering problems and methods (Civil Engineer IV).
  • Representing the City in public meetings and conferences to resolve important questions and to plan and coordinate work (Civil Engineer IV).
  • Use of advanced techniques and the modification and extension of theories, precepts, and practices of sciences and disciplines (Civil Engineer IV).
  • Coordination of the work of consultants, contractors and staff assigned to the project (Civil Engineer IV).
