About The Position

The Capital Project Engineer role involves independent evaluation, selection, and application of civil engineering techniques and procedures. At the Civil Engineer III level, this includes adapting existing plans and specifications, potentially coordinating the work of engineers, draftspersons, and technicians. At the Civil Engineer IV level, assignments require intensive and diversified knowledge of civil engineering principles, independent decision-making on engineering problems, and representing the City in public meetings and conferences. This level also involves coordinating the work of consultants, contractors, and staff. Candidates may be considered for either the Civil Engineer III or Civil Engineer IV level depending on their experience and qualifications.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering from an accredited four-year college or university.
  • Valid Driver’s License.
  • Civil Engineer III: A minimum of five years of full-time civil engineering experience, if a Professional Licensed Engineer (PE) in the State of Michigan.
  • Civil Engineer III: A minimum of eight years of full-time civil engineering experience, if has passed the Fundamental-in-Engineering (FE) exam.
  • Civil Engineer IV: Professional Engineering License in the State of Michigan or the ability to obtain one in less than six months from the date of hire.
  • Civil Engineer IV: Minimum of eight years of progressive civil engineering and engineering practice.
  • Civil Engineer III: Fundamental-in-Engineering (FE), or Professional Engineering License (PE).
  • Civil Engineer IV: Professional Engineering License (PE).

Responsibilities

  • Independent evaluation, selection, and application of standard civil engineering techniques, procedures, and criteria.
  • Adaptations and modifications to existing plans or specifications.
  • Coordinate the work of engineers, draftspersons, technicians, and others who assist in specific assignments (Civil Engineer III).
  • Application of intensive and diversified knowledge of civil engineering principles and practices (Civil Engineer IV).
  • Make decisions independently on engineering problems and methods (Civil Engineer IV).
  • Represent the City in public meetings and conferences to resolve important questions and to plan and coordinate work (Civil Engineer IV).
  • Use of advanced techniques and the modification and extension of theories, precepts, and practices of sciences and disciplines (Civil Engineer IV).
  • Coordinate the work of consultants, contractors and staff assigned to the project (Civil Engineer IV).
