About The Position

The British Columbia Investment Management Corporation (BCI) is seeking Capital Markets & Credit Investments Co-op students/Interns for the Fall 2026 (September to December) and Winter 2027 (January to April) work term. The Public Equities group manages a global equity portfolio currently comprised of nearly half of BCI’s total portfolio utilizing both index and active management strategies. The group invests in Canada, the U.S., and internationally in both the developed and emerging markets. BCI is a leader in responsible investing, actively integrating environmental, social and governance factors (ESG) into its investment analysis and decision making. Successful candidates will work in one of two teams: Active Canadian Large Cap and Global Emerging Markets. The Canadian Large Cap team focuses on the SPTSX composite, emphasizing quality businesses at reasonable prices relative to their growth attributes, integrating qualitative and quantitative analysis closely. They aim for high conviction, long-term holdings with high concentration. The Global Emerging Markets (GEM) team, launched in 2022, aims to capture Emerging Markets' growth and outperform the MSCI EM benchmark through stock, country, and sector selection, using a repeatable, fundamental, long-term investment process combining bottom-up and top-down analyses. They seek companies with quality managements, sustainable competitive advantages, and profitable growth. The co-op student/intern's responsibility is to support the analytical efforts of investment professionals in the Capital Markets & Credit Investments department to meet clients’ return and risk objectives. This role offers a broad understanding of financial markets, company and industry drivers, portfolio management techniques, and the application of finance and economics concepts in an investment management setting.

Requirements

  • Students in an undergraduate or graduate program with a preference for those in Business (Finance) or Economics.
  • Passion for investing and a drive to continually learn about financial markets.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing.
  • A high level of professionalism and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong research skills combined with analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • A fundamental knowledge of finance, accounting, business and investment-related disciplines.
  • Experience in developing financial models is considered an asset.
  • Ability to use Excel, PowerPoint, Word, and Outlook.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the country where the job is located.
  • Work permit, study permit, or visa must not have restrictions or expire during the work term.

Nice To Haves

  • Bloomberg and VBA experience is an asset.
  • An ability to write and speak Mandarin would be a plus (for GEM team).

Responsibilities

  • Support the analytical efforts of investment professionals in the Capital Markets & Credit Investments department.
  • Work closely in a four-person team (Canadian Large Cap) or with the Global Emerging Markets team.
  • Get exposure to management meetings for some of the largest companies in Canada (Canadian Large Cap).
  • Support equity research.
  • Conduct discounted cash-flows analysis.
  • Get exposure to portfolio construction discussions.
  • Assist with various projects under the supervision of portfolio managers and analysts.
  • Read company and industry reports to build an understanding of sector/stock fundamentals.
  • Produce company initiations and/or credit reports as well as industry analysis (including comprehensive writeup, full financial model/valuation, buy/sell/hold recommendation, etc.).
  • Present proprietary analysis and actionable recommendations to Investment Committees.
  • Document management meetings, providing a concise summary of the key takeaways.
  • Assist the ESG Integration team with data collection, research, modeling, proxy voting, etc.
  • Support the Partnership Portfolio team with external manager evaluation, monitoring, etc.
  • Undertake ad hoc/special projects assigned by the teams (e.g., industry, country or portfolio analysis).
