About The Position

Vote Blue is a premier national field firm that partners with organizations working to solve significant societal problems, such as protecting reproductive rights and fighting climate change. They help these organizations build the resources needed to make an impact. Vote Blue operates as a people-powered enterprise, emphasizing that their campaigns are effective due to diverse teams of talented individuals who are invested in and treated well. The Canvass Directors will be responsible for recruiting, training, and managing a team of local canvassers to contact potential voters in critical areas of Arizona. They will work within the director team to establish and scale an office from the ground up. All Directors are expected to train staff in the field, lead by example by canvassing themselves, communicate long and short-term goals to staff, and manage campaign reporting. The Lead Director manages Deputy Directors and reports to the Project Director, while Deputy Directors manage canvassers and Team Leads and report to the Lead Director. The ideal candidate is passionate about progressive politics and fostering democracy, possesses strong communication skills, enjoys working with people, is open to new challenges and leadership development, and is culturally competent to engage respectfully with teammates and the community. Hiring is immediate, with the position running through November 5th, 2026, and potential for future opportunities. The role is based in Phoenix, AZ, with a strong preference for in-state candidates, and short-term travel may be required.

Requirements

Leadership experience, ability to motivate, grow, and manage a large team
Eagerness to lead from the front and canvass several days a week
Extreme attention to detail and a proven ability to instill that quality in others
Self-starter with excellent problem-solving skills
Strong passion for community organizing and fostering civic engagement
Track record of equity and inclusion
Ability to work long hours, including evenings and weekends

Nice To Haves

Experience running paid canvasses or managing paid employees
Experience door-to-door canvassing
Familiarity with VAN (Voter Activation Network or Votebuilder) and/or MiniVAN
Experience working in underserved or marginalized communities
Facilitation experience
Local knowledge/experience

Responsibilities

Manage a team of 15-40 hourly staff who will be knocking on doors
Set goals and hold staff accountable
Train and provide ongoing motivation and support to staff
Identify, promote, and train a leadership team
Build a diverse team where staff feel respected, while fostering a culture of equity and justice
Implement quality control measures to ensure integrity of the work
Go in the field yourself a few days per week to canvass, train staff, and help drive office goals
Maintain a healthy and safe working environment for all staff
Develop strategic plans to reach registered voters in assigned locations
Manage administrative duties, including reporting data, record keeping, processing payroll, and distribution of materials
