About The Position

The Canvass Director role involves recruiting, training, and managing a team of local canvassers in critical areas of Arizona. Directors will work collaboratively to build an office from the ground up, leading by example through field training and personal canvassing. Key responsibilities include communicating goals, managing campaign reporting, and fostering a culture of equity and justice. The reporting structure involves Deputy Directors managing canvassers and Team Leads, reporting to a Lead Director, who in turn reports to the Project Director. The ideal candidate is passionate about progressive politics, possesses strong communication skills, enjoys working with people, is open to new challenges, and is culturally competent. The position is hiring immediately, running through November 5th, 2026, with potential for future opportunities. The role is based in Phoenix, AZ, with a strong preference for in-state candidates, and may require short-term travel.

Requirements

Leadership experience, ability to motivate, grow, and manage a large team
Eagerness to lead from the front and canvass several days a week
Extreme attention to detail and a proven ability to instill that quality in others
Self-starter with excellent problem-solving skills
Strong passion for community organizing and fostering civic engagement
Track record of equity and inclusion
Ability to work long hours, including evenings and weekends

Nice To Haves

Experience running paid canvasses or managing paid employees
Experience door-to-door canvassing
Familiarity with VAN (Voter Activation Network or Votebuilder) and/or MiniVAN
Experience working in underserved or marginalized communities
Facilitation experience
Local knowledge/experience

Responsibilities

Manage a team of 15-40 hourly staff who will be knocking on doors
Set goals and hold staff accountable
Train and provide ongoing motivation and support to staff
Identify, promote, and train a leadership team
Build a diverse team where staff feel respected, while fostering a culture of equity and justice
Implement quality control measures to ensure integrity of the work
Go in the field yourself a few days per week to canvass, train staff, and help drive office goals
Maintain a healthy and safe working environment for all staff
Develop strategic plans to reach registered voters in assigned locations
Manage administrative duties, including reporting data, record keeping, processing payroll, and distribution of materials
