About The Position

This position, under general supervision of a designated supervisor, involves coordinating, supervising, and performing campus safety work focused on protecting the lives and property of the general public, primarily the University community. It also encompasses community relations and educational programs/activities on the Plymouth State University campus, aligning with the University's mission and philosophy of "Ut Prosim" ("That We May Serve"). As a member of the Plymouth State University Campus Safety Department, officers support the University's missions and vision by ensuring campus safety, providing security, protection, and related services to the University community. Additionally, officers contribute to university life through participation in educational programs, committees, and other campus activities.

Requirements

  • High school graduate.
  • 21 years of age at the time of appointment.
  • Willing to engage in campus-related activities.
  • Possess a valid driver's license.
  • Capable of operating a law enforcement vehicle during both day and night, in emergencies, in congested traffic, and on unsafe road conditions caused by factors such as fog, smoke, rain, ice, and snow.
  • Possess excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to respond quickly to emergencies.
  • Ability to work under pressure.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule.
  • Ability to qualify yearly with department-issued equipment.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office.
  • Ability to use sound, independent judgment.
  • Undergo a full background check (contingent upon satisfactory results).
  • Must not have any felony convictions or serious misdemeanor convictions.
  • Two years of experience with a public safety agency or equivalent.
  • Experience as a full-time or part-time certified police officer with a City/Town/County or State law enforcement agency.
  • Knowledge of law enforcement, Safety Services, and Communication Services practices, technology, and methodology.
  • Demonstrated skill in the use and care of law enforcement and job-related equipment.
  • Demonstrated ability to react responsively in emergencies.
  • Demonstrated ability to interact positively and effectively with college students.
  • Advanced knowledge of first aid techniques.

Responsibilities

  • Promote the safety and security of persons, property, and buildings on the campus of Plymouth State University.
  • Enforce policies, rules, and regulations of the University System of New Hampshire and Plymouth State University, as well as federal, state, and local laws and ordinances.
  • Enforce campus parking regulations and ticket violators of parking regulations on campus.
  • Assist in student conduct complaints and other assigned matters.
  • Work effectively with Student Life, Residential Life staff, faculty, staff members, and law enforcement personnel of other jurisdictions to ensure effective and appropriate mitigation of disorder, crime, and crisis.
  • Work collaboratively with Student Life and Residential Life staff to provide a student-centered approach to promoting a safe and orderly environment.
  • Provide VIP protection/security.
  • Perform travel and patrol procedures requiring considerable physical effort under varying climatic conditions.
  • Assist other law enforcement officers and agencies.
  • Appear in court as a witness to present testimony in criminal cases.
  • Complete forms and enter required reports regarding activities into appropriate online Records Management Systems.
  • Ensure timely and effective communication in the form of written documentation, verbal, and electronic communication.
  • Provide required reporting to officials at Plymouth State University's Office of Student Life and Residential Life Department.
  • Proactively intervene and engage with students and campus community members while maintaining a high level of visibility in residential, academic, and administrative buildings and campus grounds.
  • Patrol to protect people and property for safety.
  • Identify activity/behavior by individuals or groups that indicates a risk to safety or well-being of the campus; approach, respond, and report in accordance with established procedures.
  • Respond to people in crisis, criminal acts, disturbance, noise complaints, motor vehicle accidents, and any other dispatcher-assigned call complaints or any other duty assigned by a supervisor.
  • Organize Officer schedules.
  • Maintain minimum coverage schedules.
  • Manage Officer timecards and time off requests.
  • Assist with budgetary duties.
  • Perform personnel management and coordination of staffing and hires.
  • Serve as primary point of contact for Campus Safety Department.
  • Be responsible for physical assets of the Campus Safety department, such as vehicles.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
