Campus Chemical Hygiene Officer
About The Position
The Campus Chemical Hygiene Officer (CHO) administers, coordinates, and executes the operational elements of the University’s chemical hygiene plan, laboratory chemical safety, hazardous materials and hazardous waste management and emergency response programs. Operating under the strategic leadership and oversight of the Associate Director of EHS, the position exercises independent professional judgment in evaluating chemical hazards and lab operations; developing, implementing, and monitoring risk-based controls; conducting inspections and coordinating corrective actions; and providing technical guidance to protect employees, students, property, the environment, and the public. The position monitors these programs for conformance with applicable federal, state, and local regulations, standards, and University requirements; coordinates assigned personnel and projects; provides field supervision as assigned; and performs other duties as assigned. Regular, reliable and non-disruptive attendance is an essential job duty, as is the ability to create and maintain collegial, harmonious working relationships with others
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in chemistry, occupational safety and health, environmental science, engineering, biology, industrial hygiene, or a related field from an accredited institution of higher education
- At least five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in chemical safety, laboratory safety, hazardous materials, hazardous waste management, occupational safety and health, or a related field
- Comprehensive knowledge of applicable occupational safety, environmental, hazardous materials, and hazardous waste regulations and standards; chemical hygiene and laboratory safety principles; and regulatory compliance practices.
- In-depth knowledge of chemical hazards, compatibility and storage, engineering controls, personal protective equipment (PPE), hazardous materials emergency response, and incident investigation practices.
- Ability to administer and coordinate day-to-day chemical hygiene, laboratory chemical safety, hazardous waste, and emergency response operations.
- Ability to analyze and evaluate complex chemical hazards and research operations; conduct and coordinate comprehensive laboratory safety inspections; and develop, implement, and monitor risk-based controls.
- Ability to interpret and apply technical and regulatory requirements; develop and recommend procedures, technical guidance, reports, and training; and administer assigned contracts, projects, records, resources, and corrective actions.
- Ability to exercise independent professional judgment, organize complex work, coordinate multidisciplinary activities, communicate effectively, and maintain productive, harmonious working relationships with University personnel, tenured faculty, regulators, contractors, emergency responders, and other stakeholders.
- Ability to pass an occupational physical exam and wear respirator/self-contained breathing apparatus and encapsulated suit
Nice To Haves
- At least three (3) years of experience managing or coordinating chemical hygiene, laboratory safety, hazardous waste, or hazardous materials emergency response programs in a high-consequence R1 research higher education environment
- Experience supervising technical personnel, leading multidisciplinary teams, and coordinating with regulatory agencies and emergency responders
- Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM)
