About The Position

Mississippi Votes is seeking a Camp Counselor for its 3rd annual Summer Youth Policy Institute (SYPI). This is a FREE, week-long residential program running from Sunday, July 12 - Saturday, July 18, 2026, designed to equip high school students with the knowledge and skills to become future civic leaders. Participants will have the opportunity to connect with other young leaders from across the state and engage in a mock legislative session, a trip dedicated to catalysts in the Civil Rights Movement, the 2026 Democracy In Action Convening, and many other impactful activities. The program will take place on the campus of Millsaps College in Jackson, MS.

Requirements

  • Experience working with youth.
  • Ability to facilitate group activities and discussions.
  • Understanding of policy-making, community organizing, and advocacy.
  • Willingness to travel for excursions.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous experience as a camp counselor or in a similar role.
  • Knowledge of the Civil Rights Movement.
  • Experience in policy analysis or advocacy.
  • Familiarity with Millsaps College or Jackson, MS.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise and guide high school students participating in the Summer Youth Policy Institute.
  • Facilitate workshops and discussions.
  • Assist with excursions to historic civil rights sites.
  • Support hands-on activities focused on policy-making, community organizing, and advocacy strategies.
  • Foster peer collaboration and leadership development among participants.
  • Ensure the safety and well-being of all participants during the residential program.
