Summer Camp Counselor
About The Position
The Summer Camp Counselor will uphold and follow all values, practices, and policies of the YMCA of Greater Springfield. They will adhere to camp policies, particularly those related to safety, and comply with the requirements of the local Department of Health and all other Massachusetts laws governing summer camp programs. The counselor will work closely with Camp Directors and Head Counselors to ensure a safe, clean, and enjoyable camp environment. Responsibilities also include completing assigned landscaping, grounds-keeping, and cleaning tasks. The role requires representing the YMCA professionally and promoting a positive and cheerful environment. Occasional weekend and late-night shifts may be required. This list of responsibilities is not meant to be all-inclusive and may be adjusted to meet operational needs.
Requirements
- Must be at least 18 years old at time of hire if power-tools are used or 17 years old at time of hire if power-tools are not used.
- Must have a high school diploma, its equivalent, or be enrolled in a GED program.
- Additional years of professional experience or a Rank of E-5 or better may be used in lieu of education requirements where permitted.
- Must have, or be willing to earn, and maintain CPR, AED, and First Aid certifications.
- Strong verbal and non-verbal communication skills.
- Ability to follow sound judgment calls in a fast-paced, participant-focused environment.
- Must be able to role-model positive behaviors.
- Must be able to work in a high-value, and potentially high-stress, environment.
- An ability to work with a diverse population.
- Exhibit core YMCA values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility.
- Excellent relationship building skills.

- Represent the YMCA in a professional manner and promote a positive and cheerful environment during each work shift.
- Occasional weekend and late-night shifts may be required.
