C++ Software Engineer

Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory•Laurel, MD

About The Position

The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory’s Air Combat and Strike Mission Analysis Group is seeking a software engineer to develop modeling and simulation applications supporting next-generation strike weapons, combat air vehicles, and other critical capabilities. The role involves building and maintaining software used for mission-level analysis that informs acquisition decisions on precision-strike technologies. The team uses AI-enabled development tools throughout the software development lifecycle, with engineers responsible for technical decisions and reviewing and validating tool outputs. The engineer will work with a multidisciplinary team of engineers and analysts on sophisticated, mission-focused projects, collaborating with internal and external partners to understand needs and solve problems. The group has more than 50 engineers, physicists, mathematicians, and computer scientists. Its work supports Department of Defense programs and is conducted in a culture emphasizing collaboration, integrity, teamwork, accountability, and personal development.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, computer engineering, or a related field.
  • Demonstrated record of developing robust, maintainable software using modern C++ 17 or newer.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with end-users about technical issues and new software capabilities.
  • Willingness and ability to learn new concepts and develop personal skills.
  • Ability to obtain the required Special Access Program (SAP) level access.
  • Ability to obtain an Interim Secret security clearance and ultimately a Secret-level clearance; eligibility requirements include U.S. citizenship.

  • Experience with AFSIM’s simulation framework and developing plugins for it.
  • Experience working with Tracking and Filtering, Data Fusion, RF, or Electronic Warfare.
  • Familiarity with Java, Python, or MATLAB.
  • Experience using AI-enabled software development tools or workflows for implementation, testing, debugging, code review, or documentation.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and enhance C++ modeling and simulation capabilities representing radar, tracking, engagement, and related mission-system behaviors.
  • Deliver software tools that enable analysts to assess military utility, system requirements, and capability tradeoffs for air-dominance and strike systems.
  • Collaborate with engineers and analysts to build, adapt, and integrate software for applications, infrastructure, and user interfaces.
  • Participate in defining requirements, designing, developing, testing, integrating, delivering, and maintaining modeling and simulation tools.
  • Use sound software engineering judgment to guide and critically review AI-enabled software development tools and their results across the software development lifecycle.
