C++ Developer

Muse Group•Medford, OR

About The Position

The C++ Developer will work primarily on engraving within the MuseScore Studio team. This is a hands-on, experienced independent-contributor role with significant autonomy, involving ambiguous and complex problems taken from design through release and long-term maintenance. MuseScore Studio is free, open-source software used by millions of musicians, students, and composers worldwide, and the work has a broad impact on an active creator community. The role focuses on the layout and rendering engine that transforms musical data into readable, professionally typeset scores. The team works across the music domain model, engraving, playback, editing, and product infrastructure.

Requirements

  • Significant professional software-development experience, including modern C++ in a large, long-lived, performance-sensitive desktop codebase.
  • Experience owning solutions end to end, from design through delivery and maintenance.
  • Commitment to code quality and sound architectural judgment.
  • Experience with object-oriented programming and domain-model design.
  • Ability to read and understand fairly complex sheet music and a good understanding of music theory.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills, including comfort working asynchronously across a distributed, global team.
  • Proficiency with AI coding tools and critical judgment about when to use them.
  • Attention to detail, particularly in music engraving.
  • An eye for visual design and care for producing beautiful scores.

Nice To Haves

  • Hands-on experience using MuseScore Studio or a competing notation or composition tool, as a user, arranger, or composer.
  • Experience with MIDI and synthesizers.
  • Experience with asynchronous and multithreaded code.
  • Experience working with fonts and FreeType.
  • Experience in rendering and OpenGL.
  • Experience working on engraving for music-composition software or a publisher.

Responsibilities

  • Work on the layout and rendering engine that arranges and draws musical objects on the canvas.
  • Contribute to the domain model representing music-theory elements as code objects, including parts.
  • Work on playback functionality that generates synthesizer events from objects.
  • Develop editing functionality for changing objects and their relationships while accounting for music-theory rules.
  • Work on infrastructure for file reading and writing, import and export, APIs, and commands.
  • Own complex solutions end to end, from design through delivery and long-term maintenance.
