About The Position

The Business Unit Manager – Product Unit is responsible for the overall leadership of the Product Unit, including planning, scheduling, and execution of operations. This role champions safety efforts, participates in budget and strategic planning, and develops succession plans and leadership skills within the unit. The manager drives improvements in safety, production, cost efficiencies, reliability, team member engagement, and environmental stewardship. They provide leadership and resources to support a high-performance work team, ensure the development and implementation of manufacturing systems using sustainability tools, and communicate quality principles. The role fosters an organizational culture based on empowerment and involvement, proactively addresses issues, understands customer requirements, and develops sustainable methods for processes. The manager oversees team members to minimize downtime and maintain quality, sets clear expectations, and fulfills area-specific 5S expectations. They also maintain and develop team relationships and cross-functional process skills. Quality expectations include ensuring an understanding of quality policy, supporting customer experience efforts, and aiding in mill-wide quality initiatives.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 10 years experience in a manufacturing lead position in pulp and paper mill.
  • Experience with Paper Machine is required.
  • Experience developing and implementing annual productivity plans.
  • Demonstrated management experience as a leader of a manufacturing process with accountability for safety, reliability, people development and performance.
  • Strong written & verbal communication skills; problem solving, negotiation, presentation and training delivery skills.
  • Microsoft Office Proficiency
  • Demonstrated leadership skills including experience with salaried direct reports, combined with technical paper-making knowledge required.

  • Bachelor’s degree in science, engineering, or pulp and paper science

Responsibilities

  • Provide overall leadership for the Product Unit, including planning, scheduling, and execution of operations.
  • Champion safety efforts by modeling and maintaining safe work practices and proactive safety management.
  • Participate in the development of budget, strategic, and capital plan processes.
  • Develop succession plans within the Product Unit.
  • Develop leadership skills and process knowledge of unit leadership personnel.
  • Drive efforts in key focus areas including safety, production and cost efficiencies, reliability, team member engagement, and environmental stewardship.
  • Provide leadership and resources to support engagement and a high-performance work team.
  • Ensure development and implementation of manufacturing systems, including use of sustainability tools such as Trouble/Cause/Correction (TCC) and Centerlining.
  • Clearly communicate and demonstrate quality principles and processes.
  • Help develop, demonstrate and support an organizational culture based upon values of empowerment, high involvement, and participative work force in a customer - and quality-focused organization.
  • Take initiative to pro-actively deal with issues both with the team and cross-functionally, ensuring communication flows to and from team.
  • Understand and meet internal and external customer requirements.
  • Develop, maintain, and use sustainable methods for all processes and their improvements.
  • Manage team members in the mill as necessary to minimize downtime and maintain quality, and sets clear expectations holding team members accountable for meeting them.
  • Fulfill area specific 5S expectations.

  • Ensure an understanding of quality policy and support efforts for a positive customer experience.
