About The Position

CBC/Radio-Canada is seeking a skilled, enthusiastic, and driven senior reporter to join its business team for a temporary long-term position from August 2026 to the end of July 2027. The ideal candidate is passionate about business news, full of ideas for stories, and understands economic forces to create clear, compelling narratives across text, audio, and video. This role involves pitching original stories, covering breaking news, conducting research and interviews, and reporting live on various platforms including social media, digital pages, television, and radio. The reporter will maintain a list of business sources and aim to create content appealing to a young, diverse audience. The position requires a strong ability to work under pressure in a deadline-driven environment and a commitment to producing journalism that elevates diverse voices and perspectives.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent.
  • Minimum 10 years relevant full-time experience.
  • Excellent understanding of economic, business, and consumer challenges.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the diversity within the business beat and the diversity of our target audience.
  • Come with sources and contacts in the business community and beyond.
  • Experience writing, researching, fact-checking, and packaging text, audio, and video pieces.
  • Strong presentation skills; comfortable reporting live and unscripted.
  • Deep familiarity with social media and ability to surface trending stories.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with a team and across departments.
  • Proven ability to work in a high-stress, tight-deadline environment.
  • Experience working on multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Ability to work flexible hours and do overtime as needed.
  • Knowledge of the public broadcaster's role, responsibilities, and journalistic standards.
  • English (Reading - P - Professional), English (Speaking - P - Professional), English (Writing - P - Professional).

  • University degree in journalism or equivalent preferred.
  • Examples of work (2 video stories, 2 audio stories, 2 text stories, and 2 examples of live coverage) to be included with application.

Responsibilities

  • Pitch stories on the economy, cost of living, and challenges facing Canadian businesses and consumers.
  • Go live when the story demands it, filing into live story pages and live programming, including News Network, radio news, and social media platforms.
  • Go out on location whenever possible to cover major or fast-moving events such as tariff announcements, AI advancements, interest rate decisions, and consumer reports.
  • Research, interview, and gather new information.
  • Pitch and shape stories with a target 30-49 diverse Canadian audience in mind, developing content relevant to this demographic.
  • Make business stories relatable to a general audience and explain their impact on people's everyday lives.
  • Write scripts and file stories for both digital and broadcast platforms.
  • Generate and execute journalism that elevates a range of voices and perspectives.
  • Work collaboratively with editors and vettors to sharpen writing, headlines, and text.
  • Understand the elements needed to produce strong visual and audio stories.
  • Remain calm under pressure, recognize issues of importance quickly, and take effective action to ensure appropriate coverage.
  • Develop and maintain contacts with a variety of sources.
  • Have a strong understanding of legal journalistic issues and the ethical principles of Journalistics Standards and Practices.
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues on the business team and other parts of the CBC.
